As I said a long time ago, to fake those ID is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO easy, that I would keep them out of my collection.

We realy need someone with a wealth of knowladge to make a reference about those ID's. And, as a thumb rule - NKVD ID from the 1930-40's for $30-50? NO WAY!

I didn't ook at those particular auctions. But I sometimes wonder if some of these odd results are "fixed" to try and make the products look good.

Browsing the "E" site tonight I came across two Different styles of KGB ID cards. One had the print in red with I believe the KGB shield and the other printed in black with large letters "KGB" these both are blank and I'm thinking the one in the black lettering is a phony to play with.

Both are fake/fantasy items.

The situation regarding KGB IDs is different from that for all other old Soviet state security organs (OGPU, NKVD, MGB, SMERSH, etc). There are many fake, and quite a few genuine, of these latter IDs around. It is not a crime to make the these fake IDs in the former USSR. It is technically a crime to sell them as genuine ones but it is hard to enforce and many of us, yours truly included, have been burnt. The result is that you get a bunch of fakes (and good aged fakes) but no blank ones.

It is different with KGB IDs. The KGB was so recent. Russian laws also protect the KGB, its affairs simply rolled over into those of the new organs. It is therefore illegal to make fake KGB IDs. For this reason you get many fake fantasy "KGB" IDs. These are aways sold blank, look nothing like genuine KGB IDs and have enough errors (one of the most common types says State Committee of Danger instead of State Committe of Security) that the makers can not be charged with faking KGB IDs.

There are no known fakes of actual KGB ID types - either filled out or blank. It would be too dangerous.

Genuine KGB IDs are also extremely rare. They are in fact are tha genuine Cheka IDs!!! This is because they had to be returned and still in official storage.
