How ugly these are!

Couldn't they buy real ones or at least decent copies?

I don't remember anyone wearing medals in the movie... Can someone refresh my memory on this?

The second ship I served on was used in the filming of Hunt for Red October. Over the years, most of the Cyrillic signs had been painted out, but there was still a nice metal radiation sign with Cyrillic writing on it on the backside of the executive officer's stateroom door!

In a film the Medals themselves probably wouldn't look too bad from a distance.
But what really does annoy me is that if they did so much research they could have at least got the ribbons right!

BTW does anybody else get caught with the Tele on pause and zoomed checking to see if the ribbons on Soviet Officers uniforms fit, in various films.
or is it just me.

Dave,
It's funny you should say that, because I can't either and I've watched the film at least four times.
If at all, it was most likley at the begining of the film before the on-board scenes where they just had ribbons.
I don't think I would forget a Glory with a Blue and White ribbon that easy.

Embarressed Eddie.

I do... For example, since I started collecting Soviet items, I have been carefully scanning through my James Bond collection just to check. And the fact is, by the late 1980-ties, they were getting quite accurate...

About Hunt for Red October, I don't recall any medals/orders either.

Ah, Bond,
Wasn't it in Goldeneye where they had a pretty dodgy looking, what was supposed to be the Order of Victory?

Good to know I'm not the only mad person to check the ribbons

Eddie.

If you look at Captain Marco Ramius' ribbons, they match the ones on eBay quite nicely.

I really like the Hunt for Red October and I own the DVD. I was bored last evening so I tried to find these awards in the movie. I carefully looked through all the interior shots (the subs, the interior offices of American and Russian officials, commanders quarters, etc ) any scene that had stuff hanging on the walls I looked at. I was looking for anything resembling the framed awards being sold on Ebay, or for anyone wearing these. Because of their horrible accuracy I highly doubted they would be used on a uniform. After all, 100% accurate data was present back then as to what these looked like, and how they were worn.

Anyhow, I couldn't find these anywhere, in fact the only Soviet suspended award I noticed was on the suit of the Soviet character "Bedorin" ( the guy Ramius sends the letter to saying he decided to borrow the sub ) and it was an obviously false Gold Star of HSU. So who knows? actual prop or maybe wishful thinking? perhaps the seller meant to say these were used by their son, in his high school's production of "The Hunt for Red October" actual cardboard submarine set to be auctioned off later

Art,

You never know with Hollywood. I would bet they were actually used in the movie but the scene they were in never made it past the cuts.

Yes,
That's no doubt what happened. When you think of it most of the film was shot aboard the subs so the most likely place to have seen them would have been near the start of the film.

Eddie.
