"Here is a super patriotic pin, measures 1 1/2 inches across, brass backing, with a picture of Josef Stalin in full generals uniform, has a hard plastic crystal that has yellowed and cracked from age, I think that this is from the early war years or pre-WW2, brass back has a serial number 425h, and a symbel of some kind"
"... has a serial number 425h, and a symbel of some kind" In fact that's not a serial number, but Price of 25 Kopeks!!! "... this is from the early war years or pre-WW2 ..." This is definetely after-war issue. Observe of Stalin's badge: |

Not a joke !!!
There were several types of Coat-of-Arms, Cast Aluminium or Copper Wall Plaques mounted externally on official and governement buildings. Some of them even were in wood !!
They represented mainly the USSR Coat-of-Arms badges, but also awards, as the following picture shows it. Ch. (Pic from Goodman's book "Lenin Legacy"). |

The "plaque" in your illustration is different!
It has the star to the left of Lenin bulging where the one in the pic is flat! How big are the originals? How many variations? Rusty.

Hi Rusty,
I suspect there were a number of variations, if I look to the different pictures of USSR Coat-of-Arms I have seen... Unlike the official awards these wall plaques were certainly not all made in an official well identified, dedicated and registered place, as was the mint... So, number of variations : I don't know, but obviously a number of them... maybe each of them is a different (artisanal) one... Size of the one on the pic. : 4 1/4" X 4 1/4 ". Cheers. Ch. |

Hi Rusty,
That's right, you can commonly see this type of large "plaques" on or inside buildings; most common ones I have seen: Red Banner of Labor, Order of Lenin, Order of the October Revolution. Here's a pic to illustrate, it was taken inside the Electrotechnical University of Saint Petersburg. There were also one of each (large size) above the main entrance (sorry didn't take pictures of these). Marc |
