There is very often an overlap between Phaleristics and Numismatics. I went from being a numismatist to philatelist to phalerist (as well as some other things including deltiologist) and I believe many people do start with Numismatics before becoming a Phalerist. They have lots of things in common and all three selections are often found for sale in the same venue.

I've not picked up many coins recently but I do have over 135,000 coins in the collection. The phaleristic items will have to grow in number considerably before they catch up.

I too started collecting coins at quit an early age (8). Coins however, don't have a tracable history. Soviet orders and some medals do. That and the fact that I studied history and the fact that I love Russia and went there with my father since the 80s, made me focus on soviet orders.

of cause orders and medals are good and less than coins, and not easy to have. but coins is a big collect market.

Yes, same here. I've been a numismatist for 35 years. Gives you a keen eye and definitely is a good prerequisite for becoming a philatelist.
