Guards Badges

I picked up a very nice Guards badge but the screwpost threads need to get cleaned up. Does anyone know what size threads were used? I need to chase them with a die and don't want to damage them even more by "guesstimating". Thanx/Spasiba!

Gene,

I think it will be tough to answer this question. The WWII Guards badge was made by several factories, and each used it's own screwplate, so I assume the threads will also be different.

Gents,

I once again ask for assistance. I picked up two very nice Guards badges but need correct nuts for them. Once is a silvered nut that fits fine and the other has a loose fitting large nut that slides right off the post. Anyone know where I can get correct nuts for these, perhaps from scrapper badges? I can trade these (preferably) or buy them outright. Still very new to Soviet stuff but I'm learning more every day. Thanx to all (especially Ed, Alexei and Dmitry for their patience).

Gene,

I think your best bet would be to send those badges to a dealer you trust, asking him to find suitable replacements.

I don't believe they ever used silvered nuts on those badges.

Alexei,

That sounds like an invitation!:D I'm pretty sure the silver nut (as well as the oversize one) are incorrect. Might you have any?

Gentlemen,

Suddenly most of my customers started asking for WWII gurads badges without a fringe on the lower edge of the banner. I thought I'd explain this, this difference is not in the fringe, but in the design under the enamel on the flag. Post-war badges have wayvy surface. The first two badges on the scan are WWII, and the third is from 1950s.

Alexei,

Here's another variation. Is this WWII or later? I think it's post-war manufacture.

New World,

This is an unusual variations with interesting "wave" design, my guess it would be from early 1950s. I am told that they were using WWII badges till the end of the 1040s.

Is there a reference book where all these variations are described?

Gvardia badges were made by different mints and I suspect that variations are mint-specific. They were made in millions during WWII and after, hence all the deffernces.

New World,

Actually WWII badges were not made by mints, but by the "Pobeda" factory, and a bunch of other smaller shops. Borisov mentions that the fringe was introduced only in the 1950, but WWII badges with the fringe also exist. I don't know of any reference describing all the variations.
