Badge "50 Years Of The Union Of Authors".

This is a good looking, well-made badge and the first I've seen of its kind. It says it is for the 50th anniversary of the Writer's Union of the USSR. I'm not sure who the profile is of (it certainly isn't Pushkin), but the badge look good to me and unfortunately the seller seems to agree - $$$:(

My only concern is that it seems to be made with paint rather than the usual enamel. Anybody know anything about these?

That's Maksim Gorky's profile, the famous writer and first head (1934-1936) of the USSR Union of Writers.

:laff - get it? Sorry, I couldn't resist. I've been reading Bulgakov again and disembodied head jokes come easily.

Thanks Auke, I know who Gorky is and I like his park too;); I just don't remember what every famous writer looks like (especially in relief form on a small badge).

The question I still have is why would such an obviously socially and historically important organization like the Writer's Union only call for cheap enamel or paint - at least that's the way it looks in the photos - from the LMD in making this anniversary badge?
