Is it "classes" or 1st (red), 2nd (blue), 3rd (green)? I get lost in the sports badges outside of the Dynamo ones, and even then...

Let me update what I said. I left out a word. Shouldn't it be 1st, 2nd, 3rd "place" instead of "class" since we are talking about sporting competition badges? I know the Russian word is still class, but...

Hi Phillip,

You are right that разряд has many meanings e.g. category; class; kind; position; stage; rate; grade; skill-category; labour grade; rank; rating; sort; league.

I guess its meaning in this case depends on what these badges were awarded for. I always assumed that "medals" were awarded for specific performances e.g. 2nd place in the 110m hurdles, whereas these badges were given for less specific performances.

Well thank you, Simon. Always glad to learn more about what I know little of. And I know little of the system of awarding medals and badges in the sports system of the Soviet Union. It seems the mints were awfully busy with all the categories and ways of earning an award. This really is a grey area for me.

Does anyone know if these GTO badges are ones that would have been issued or are a "collectors" version?

I presume from their state and construction that they are relatively late i.e. 80s-90s. There are quite a few on Eb*y at present.

They are 100% real. They are from 70s-80s.
I lived in the USSR these years and worked in this field (sports). Millions of badges like this were issued.

Yes, they are performance based. The person was required to show results in cross (running), swimming, skiing, gymnastics and few more sports (I don't remember now all the details after 20 years :))
Based on the results the person was getting 1st, 2nd or 3rd class.
Also there was a Soviet Union GTO Spartakiada (and Spartakiadas / Tournaments on lower levels - districts, cities, etc).
