Of course now that I know more about soviet orders...
Captain Ramius, of course, already had the order of lenin (evident on ribbon bar from publicity still). What Dr. Petrov should have said was "You will be named a hero of the soviet union for this!" But I guess that doesn't flow as well when you are about to climb into a rubber raft and your lips are cold.
jeff So let's take a look at his rack. Order of lenin and, ironically, order october revolution make sense. Then an Ushakov and then...order glory + victory of germany? And then some odd and undecipherable awards finishing with two capture of Berlin medals. The Captain led an interesting life before he defected. Ok, well maybe they are irreproachable service medals but they sure look like capture berlin. Actually the one on the second to bottom row looks like a US prisoner of war ribbon. I'm sure there's a story behind that! Last edited by Jeffrey Meffert; 11-14-2006 at 11:46 PM. Reason: update |

To get back to the original subject - most of you have got awesome collections... A long way to go for me. I just built a frame box myself to display my awards. I will post some pictures soon. It has a board at the back and the medals are hanging on screws. For the screwback orders I drilled some holes. The only thing I don't have an answer for is how to attach documents and pictures. There's about 1 inch between the back and the glass. I could use thumbtacks but I don't want them to be visible. Any other thoughts?

Documents
Please don't skewer an old awards book with a thumbtack, it will make me cry. You can try old fashioned photo mounting "corners". In some cases I use self adhesive CD holders and slip the booklet into that. Other times I just have them resting gently on the bottom of the frame and design my arrangement around that.

How to display Soviet awards
Auke,
First, PLEASE DO NOT put thumb tacks into documents and photos. The photo corners is a good idea as well as using plastic to hold the document. It all depends on the size of the document or photo. I'll add that the document(s) & photo(s) need protection from the elements, i.e. UV Rays etc. Doc |

Yikes. I too plead with you not to impail the documents. Photo corners work, I've also cut slits in the backing board that line up with the top and bottom of an order book and run ribbon through to hold the book down.

Of course I would never 'pierce' the documents / pics, I meant to press the thumbtacks half into the board and let the doc 'rest' on the pins of the thumbtacks, with one or two thumbtacks above the doc to prevent it from falling. But photo corners are much better ideas, I should have thought of that myself. Thanks.

The other way I was talking about
Sorry about flash artefact but this is what I meant by just propping them in the frame and arranging around them.
Glad you didn't mean to actually tack the booklets. The outcry from the community was impressive. I think we were going to march on your house and rescue your documents. |
