Suvorov 1st to LTG Mark W. Clark

To all:

In my collection I have a photograph of LTG Mark W. Clark, CG, 5th Army, shaking hands with Red Army Gen-Maj of the Artillery Ivan Sousloparov after having just been awarded the Order of Suvorov 1st Class. The photo is a side shot with Sousloparov on the left and Clark on the right. Clutched in Clark's left hand is a large, square, dark-colored award presentation case for the Suvorov (I can't make out the actual color as the photo is black and white).
As many of you Soviet historians know, Souslaparov later went on to sign the German surrender documents on behalf of the Soviets in Reims, France in May 1945 - without Stalin's knowledge. Stalin was so incensed that he had Sousloparov immediately recalled to Moscow and then demanded a second surrender ceremony in Berlin-Karlshorst at which Zhukov presided. I'm uncertain of Gen-Maj Sousloparov's final fate although I'm sure it didn't include an Order of Lenin.

Regards,

slava1stclass

I've got this Order of the Patriotic War 2. Class with ribbon-bar which was in a polish (!) case. Very strange... And the case looks like it was made for this medal, maybe by the owner... Serial Number is 745831.

Hi

It is just a standart Polish case, nothing special about it and of course, it WAS NOT made for this OGPW....

BTW, did you got the order and box from the veteran, or from a seller?

Thanks. I've got it from a flea-market some years ago.

Majorpayne- Looks like an interesting box, perhaps made up by the veteran, or perhaps made up for a ceremony somewhere. Perhaps a Soviet officer, sympathetic to the Polish cause, who awarded the GPW to a Polish officer? Who knows? Have you had it researched? If I saw it for sale at a market, I'd buy it just for the possible story behind it... It might well be worth researching. I think it's kinda cool, even though it's not 'right'.

Thanks Dave, I hope to find out more about the research of soviet awards with this forum. I've heard that Mr. Putin closed all russian archives, is this true? Any chance to research some of these orders, I have a few (Red Star, Red Banner, OPW etc.).

Major,

It is still possible to have the awards researched. Please check our research section.

For sale on eBay as early Soviet screwback order box and ribbon.

What are your thoughts on authenticity of the box?

I'm mainly interested in the red material!
If it's original...

If it's authentic, then the box is a bonus!
