Re: Help with translating russian.

Hello RedLion,
It is a commemorative pin for the 25th year anniversary of Korsun-Schevchenky battle. The city Korsun was liberated from German occupation on 14 February 1944 (like today, but 67 years ago).

Re: Help with translating russian.

For starters, you may be having trouble because it is in Ukrainian.

You are right in that it commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Korsun-Shevchenko operation.

Well, no wonder I was having problems with the pin. I was somewhat close but no cigar. I guess, it would only make sense to learn some Ukrainian as well or at least brush up on. :chuckle However there is one thing that is puzzling. If this soviet era pin, why would they use Ukrainian? I know the battle took place in the Ukraine but I thought that the offical lan. of the CCCP was Russian?

Re: Help with translating russian.

Yes, the "official" language of the USSR was Russian, but each republic still maintained its native tongue. Many/most of the myriad of documents issued by the Soviet government were printed in both Russian and the regional language. The practice of using the local dialect was encouraged more than ever during the latter portion of the existence of the Soviet Union in a political move to keep certain republics happier than they had been when they were annexed. It wasn't just the languages, but the local cultural heritage, music, literature, art, etc. as well.
