Brezhnev Uniform and awards - Page 4

On the cover of the November-December 1999 Journal of the Orders and Medals Society of America (50, 6), there is an impressive color picture of Brezhnev with all ribbons (though the set may have grown, as he seems to have had "only" 3 hero stars at the time). Most interesting is the effort on page 2 of the same issue to identify the ribbons row-by-row (all 16 rows) with 9 ribbons left unidentified.

If I didn't think it violated someone's copyright, I'd scan the pages and post them!

According to Kutsenko, Brezhnev had 83 Foreign awards, and 40 Soviet awards. there is a list (Pages 62-68....) in the book "Marshals & fleet admirals of the USSR".

Are you trying to post pages of text? These are tricky. You get mixed results because there is alot of contrast between the white page and black text.

If you would like, try emailing me the first page of the scanned text. I will try and squeeze it down a much as possible and I'll post it. If it's readable I'll do the rest, if not, and if the article isn't really long I re-type it.

I have an almost identical collection of Brezhnev's ribbons but mine contains the ribbon of Khmelnitzky 1st Class, while yours is 2nd Class (same as on Brezhnev's picture you posted). Did Brezhnev award himself the Khmelnitzky 1st Class somewhere along the line?

No. although this collector of Soviet awards gave himself almost everithing but "mother Heroine", When he got Khmelnitski 2nd
(No. 1182 On 23.5.1945) he was not in a position to upgrade it. however, the compensetion was modest, and in 1978 he awarded himself the order of victory.

Here is one of the real Brezhnev uniforms - and its quite impressive fruit salad - as displayed in the Imperial War Museum, in London.

Sorry, the quality of the first picture is not excellent, but I took all of them in July 2002, under bad conditions of light... (and moreover, I don't think I am a professional photographer...)

Some close-ups to follow will help in seeing much better the ribbons (if no pb with the size of the file!!).

What we can already see is that the last Soviet medal displayed is on the 5th rank, on the far right (not including the rank of the Order of Victory itself) : Medal for 60 years of the Armed Forces.

The other ranks seem to be all foreign ribbons.
Not being launching a contest; but can any member of the Forum identify all of them ? :p
