year+

well, its been more than a year since the lady has had it and she told me yesterday that she is still working on it, but it's 'very difficult', not that she was giving up...i really think it might not be until this summer that i see it again. I have found belt, buttons, and boards for it so I am eager to see what she can do. I mostly write this to pretend there is real progress! DougD

Which pants did you exactly use for patches?

pants

hi willie,

this type of tunic had a pair of pants of fabric matching the tunic, as well as generals stripes that matched the piping (material, color). By 'sacrificing' the pants, the restorer should be able to rebuild at least one of the panels of the tunic, the piping, and perhaps the cuffs. There will still have to be some sewing for spots, but I hope the pants are usable the way she thinks they can be. She has already taken them apart. If the tunic had no pants, or came with the dark blue breeches, the project could not even have been attempted.

Hi Doug,
Did you sacrifice the pants because you just plan to display the tunic, or are you planning to buy another to replace the "dead" one? :)

esteban,

not 100% sure what you mean, but the only way to 'save' this tunic is to sacrifice the pants. the cloth has to be used from it to make at least one new panel (lower left), and maybe some patches. The cloth from the generals stripes might be used to rebuild the piping, but i can not be sure that that can be pulled off; can piping really be removed and resewn? Some of the most damaged areas of the tunic are the cuff and chest piping, so if it can't be done i am not sure how good the overall result will be.

As for getting another pair of pants, I doubt it. They would add value to a uniform, but as this uniform will be a HEAVY restoration it will not have near the value it would if in original good shape; so, I am not sure it's worth it. As blue generals breeches with the magenta generals stripes could also be worn with the tunic, and are much easier to find, that might make sense.

next week

I was told by the lady that she is 99% done and I can pick it up next weekend if all goes well! I am actually nervous; i really hope she was able to salvage such a wonderful tunic.

Will post pics ( no matter what the result) when i bring it home.
