I found the original Decree for his Red Star. Exactly as written in the Order Booklet.

A little more digging can also reveal his wartime post. In April 1944 he was a Guards Lieutenant-Colonel, head of SMERSH of the 31st Guards Rifle Division of the 11th Guards Army.

By February 1945 he was a Guards Major, head of SMERSH of the 18th Guards Red Banner Rifle Division, also of the 31st Guards Army.
NKGB, Partisan, SMERSH - sounds like a "made to order" faerie-tale, in this case it is all legitimate.
