Thanks Alexei.
So, the case is still to be solved :( The point is that it is always better for a collector to fully understand and speak/read the language of his collection... Not always easy... Ch. |

Martyn Akimovich Surin HSU
Hi everyone
I wanted to share this one with you. Here is a citation for a Hero Star which I had researched. I don't have any of his awards, but got this done as he was the father of my wife's parent's neighbour in a small village in Belarus. He did all this after only one month in the army, being conscripted immediately after the liberation. He also won a Red Star for rescuing the Regimental banner "under a great risk of death". Seems to have been quite a guy! Had a school named after him too. McL SURIN, Martyn Akimovich Private Rifleman of 631 Rifle Vitebsk Regiment of 159 Rifle Red Banner Order Suvorov Vitebsk Division Presented for the award Hero of the Soviet Union Born 1908 Belarusian Not a Party member In GPW since July 1944 No wounds In Red Army since 11/7/44 Drafted by Kholopinski RVK, Minsk region No previous awards Address, Minsk region, Kholopinski district, village Rudnaya, wife Surina, Yevdokia Petrovna During the forcing of the river Nioman in the area of the town of Puni he was first to cross the river, set up a machine gun and provided for the crossing of the whole company. On 16 August 1944 in the area of the village of Rudze, Lithuanian SSR, the enemy went over to a counterattack by infantry and tanks. Enemy tanks apprached close to the trench where comrade Surin was defending. With a submachine gun burst Surin repulsed the advance of the tank and 12 individuals. After this he threw an anti-tank grenade under the tank, the tank stopped and the crew tried to flee but were annihilated by Surin. From the flank a second tank was moving in Surin's direction. Comrade Surin allowed it to 10-15 meters and threw another grenade, damaging the tank. The crew were annihilated by the grenade. On 17 August on the approaches to the border of Eastern Prussia the Germans were defending desparately and went over to counterattack 10-12 times in the day. The platoon of which comrade Surin was a part was order to reach the river Sheshupa. Comrade Surin with a shout of "Hura" raised the platoon into the attack and was first to burst upon the river bank, but the fire of an enemy machine gun was preventing the advance of the platoon. Comrade Surin crossed the river and annihilated the machine gun with a grenade, after which the whole platoon was transferred to the western bank of the river Sheshupa where it is currently located. Deserves awarding with the title Hero of the Soviet Union. 20 August 1944 Commander of 631 Rifle Regiment Subcolonel Dmitriyev > >loads of signatures including General Chernyakhovski, com. 3rd Bel. front > Bestowed with the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the presentation with Order of Lenin and medal Gold Star, 24/3/45 |
