Re: The Wearing of Ribbons on Uniforms
Ribbons were worn on the parade uniform when used as a parade-walkout uniform. I do not know if the regulations were so specific as to whether the ribbons should be sewn-on or made from metal with separately attached ribbons, but at least the plastic covered metal backed cloth ribbon bars were used for civilian clothing only.
In his recent book, Streather states that regulations called for the ribbons to be sewn-on, but I would not really want to make such categorical statements. Pics: 1. Gagarin wearing pinback ribbon bars on his service uniform 2. Some Infantry or MVD colonel wearing a pinback ribbon bar on the M69 parade uniform. In this thread, http://soviet-awards.com/forum/sovie...ieutenant.html, John Holmes is wearing a single pinback "70th anniversary of the Soviet armed forces" on his service jacket. Re: The Wearing of Ribbons on Uniforms
No uniform regulations I have read seem to state which style is correct. The sewn-on ones look better, but the pin-back ones are more practical - the ribbons were to be worn on firld, every-day and walking-out uniforms, so one would need three sets of them, and since many servicemen had only one uniform as parade/walking-out it would be hard for them to remove the sewn-on ribbons every time they needed a parade uniform (with the actual awards).

Unknown ribbons for identification.
I shall freedly admit to having an inter-holiday "stupid moment", but I need help from the Assembled Wise Ones.
As part of a trove of ribbons (mostly PDRA) that I was directed to by a helpful forum comrade (thanks again!), some mysteries were included. I know that I recall seeing som of these somewhere, but the synapses are not connecting. Help!! All are the standard 24-mm "Soviet" width. I have numbred them (1-16) for "easy" reference. All IDs of these problem children are appreciated. Thanks in advance! :thumbsup |

Re: Unknown ribbons - help, please
#10 was also used for some "Organisation" award (if not more than one) but with the number of non-federal RF awards out there today I'm surprised they've not started using colours outside the visual spectrum.

And I thought that some of the color schemes being used already transcend the visual range, especially the quirky unbalanced (in all senses of the word) ribbons. |

Re: Unknown ribbons - help, please
It probably is where lots of left over ribbon went as the quality on the "Organisation" awards are usually par with the state and ministerial awards. Some unofficial awards (such as the anniversary of St. Petersburg synagogue) come with a different ribbon almost ever time. It may well be because they could only get so much of each left over ribbon rather than some other "magical" reason that some dealers may attribute to it.
No doubt now the ministerial service medals have a new ribbon design the old ones will be on unofficial awards with 3 "classes".
