He had six serious wounds red strips), and one minor (yellow). Interestingly they are not arranged according to regulations, but apparently in the order received.

Do you have a color picture? This is the first - and only - time I see it. Is there a document for such a ribbon?

Tal,

I remember reading about her, and her books, and I have seen her photos when she was old.
I believe this is the proper place for the Star according to the 1950s regulations.

Art,

Yes, she was a squadron commander in the famous 588 Night Bombers Regiment, and flew 810 sorties. After the was she wrote three very good books about the war.

Photographs Of Recipients Of Soviet Awards.

On July 26 an exhibition devoted solely to Kalashnikov mashine guns opened in the weapons museum in Germany. The exhibition was personally honored by the creator of these famous arms Mikhail Kalashnikov, who is currently 82.

A picture from exhibition showing Mikhail Kalashnikov wearing his 2 HSL awards is attached. Besides 2 HSLs he was also awarded Lenin and State 1st cl Prizes, as well as Red Star Order and some foreign decorations.

Does anyone have the full list of Kalashnikov's awards or better yet a photo of him wearing awards?

Kalashnikov: 'I wish I'd made a lawnmower'

In todays Guardian newspaper (UK)...

Kate Connolly, Berlin
Tuesday July 30, 2002
The Guardian

He will go down in history as the creator of the world's most famous rifle, the AK-47, hailed by enthusiasts for its durability and lightweight firepower. But now Mikhail Kalashnikov says he wishes he had paid more attention to his garden instead.

Mr Kalashnikov, now 82, said if he had his time again he would try to design something useful rather than destructive - preferably a lawnmower.

"I'm proud of my invention, but I'm sad that it is used by terrorists," he said on a visit to Germany, adding: "I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work - for example a lawnmower."

The former Red Army officer was opening an AK-47 exhibition in a weapons museum in Suhl, eastern Germany. His comment, made to the German tabloid Bild, was reminiscent of Albert Einstein's remark reflecting on his role in the development of the atom bomb: "If only I had known, I should have become a watchmaker."

Mr Kalashnikov, a peasant's son who lives in Siberia, was quick to stress he has made not a kopek from his rifle, 100m of which have been sold since production began in 1947. "The state took everything for it," he said.

He said the Germans were indirectly responsible for the design, which was adopted by the Russian army in 1949. In 1941 a fellow soldier asked him: "Why do our soldiers have only one rifle between three men, while the Germans have automatics?" "So I invented an automatic," he said.

Thanks, that thread is great!

Mikhail Kalashnikov also published the book recently called "From the Stranger's Doorstep to the Kremlin Gate".

It has been translated in English. Anyone read the book?
