Marshal Of The Fleet Ivan S Isakov

Greetings, Gentlemen Of The Forum,

I subscribed to this forum a few weeks ago and have found it very interesting thus far reading many of the previous posts. I see there is a lot of interest in the uniforms of high ranking Soviet officers.

I have been interested in and have collected Soviet militaria for some time now and have not known there were places such as this to share information and opinions.

I thought it a pity to keep all my collection to myself and have decided to share it here.

I am not very much of a computer expert. As a matter of fact, I do not own a digital camera, so forgive me for the poor quality scans of printed photos that I will post.

This is the uniform that once belonged to "Marshal Of The Fleet", I S Isakov. As many of you may know, he certainly was an interesting Chap. With my limited photographic skills, I have only taken two shots of his uniform; One overall, and one detail of the cuff work.

I appreciate with great pleasure the opportunity to share my things with fellow enthusiasts.

Hello! welcome to the forum, its nice to have another person here in cloth rather than in the medals / orders section.

I have a few questions about the uniform, hope you don't mind, but I had some notions that might be wrong.

The uniform you show is an M1945 uniform with the rank insignia that I always thought was just for Kuznetsov (until 1955); though Isakov was an Admiral Flota in 1944, it was not the same Admiral Flota rank as Kuznetov (who got the new rank insignia as head of the navy). Isakov was not given the new rank insignia until 1955 when the title of the rank was changed to Admiral Flota of the Soviet Union (only he, Kuznetsov, and Gorshkov held this full rank). Was Isakov actually given the new insignia between 1944 and 1955? If so, can you show any photos of him wearing an M1943 or M1945 uniform with this insignia? There is an altered photo of him on P. 169 of Kutsenkovs Marshals book; its a nice photo but the boards are artist add ons (you can still see his stars below!

If he did not get the new rank insignia until 1955, then the M1945 uniform having the rank insignia does not make sense. Or, as has happened before, I am wrong and my notions about who had the rank insignia.

Hi Doug and many thanks for the welcome.

Your questions are very intriguing. I wish I could respond with greater detail about the entitlements and regulations for this uniform. When particular piece came to me, I let it speak for itself. With the pedigree it had, there was no need to question anything. I do have at least one image of Isakov in this uniform dated 1945, It's a newspaper image of low quality.

In the last eight years or so, I have worked for an American/Russian company at various locations throughout CIS. With a lot of effort on my time off, I was able to acquire (WITHOUT help from any dealer type either) a significant amount of historical material, mostly uniform items.

newspaper

Hi again,

Can you scan and post the photo from the newspaper? If you can, and then enlarge it a bit, you can usually see new details. I'd love to see it, as it would be proof my assumption was wrong : )

Thanks!
Doug

Greetings Doug,

The news clipping I'm sure is packed in a box someplace along with with so many things since our latest move. I will find eventually and certainly post it when I do.

Soon enough, I will be spending less time in CIS, while making a home in America again. I feel, it a good decision. I know a man in Crimea, where I will visit soon for two or three weeks, that may have good photographs of both Kuznetov and Isakov, wearing uniform we are studying. It would be interesting to all for them to be seen.

In any case, I have my son making scans of photos of other things that I will post soon.

Thanks and good evening.

That would be great if you could post photos of Isakov wearing an M1945 uniform like Kuznetsov's (there are some very good shots in books of Kuznetsov in the M1945 uniform with the insignia we have been discussing). I had always thought that although this rank insignia came out in 1944/45 it was ONLY given to Kuznetsov, even though both he and isakov held the rank of Admiral of the Fleet; that as head of the navy Kuznetosv had unique rank. Even though I would still like to see a photo of Isakov in this uniform, I am starting to think he DID have this insignia. Live and learn!

Greetings men! Excuse me for delay. Also excuse me as I do not have many photos. I found these and think that is all of the uniform for this time. In the future I will buy digital camera, learn to use it of course and make more photos of some things.

This is not very good image, but at least one can see his decorations. To make this complete, two Ushakov 1st class and Red Star is needed. In the future I will find examples that suit me. It is a pity that I have not given complete effort lately in doing this.

Never I have been able to get original owned medals and decorations of high ranking man like this. In Soviet times they were always claimed by someone when he died. It was ok to keep the uniforms, just do not try to keep orders.

The research for what decorations and medals this man had is very easy to locate. It is with my effort the reconstruction of awards is what you see, up to the end of 1945. It is just the way a tunic was made with the eyes to hold a long pin bar, all fitted perfect in any case.

Soon I will make new posts of some Marshal Of The Fleet caps.

Thank you and good evening.

The ribbons are badly mounted I think... but still an impressive uniform!
