Based in Europe (obviously not the same trip as travelling from California...), I have to say that I am more than interested in such a project !
Any other candidate ?

I would like to come back to this idea and give it - if possible - more reality.

Victory Day, May 9, 2004, will be a Sunday. This obviously facilitates things in terms of timing.

I personally plan to go for the first time to Moscow on this occasion (except if imperative business reasons forbid me to do so. But let me cross fingers).
For the time being, I have organized nothing yet. But I plan to begin doing it in a near future : define period and days to stay in Moscow, establish a visit program, booking of flight, hotel...

I think it could be a great opportunity for some Forum Members willing to do it, to meet together here, and attend the celebration events.

If some Forum Members are interested in this project, please let us know. I have already seen some interest shown by Stephende (at the origin of this great idea) and Rusty (HuliganRS)... Is it still the case ?

What do you think of this idea ?
Are you interested in this idea of meeting other Forum Members (as a group, individually but joining only for the celebrations, ... everything is "open") on this occasion ? I think it could be great to see some of us together in Moscow, in next May.

As soon as several of us seem interested, we would define what would be the ideal length of stay, the not-to-miss places to visit, how to take part to the celebration events...
All experienced advices of those having already being in Moscow in this period will be warmly welcome.
Moreover, don't hesitate if you have any question...

Please, let me know your feeling about this project. I hope we could be many Members to join !!

Are you candidate for the Victory Day 2004 Moscow Tour ? Please, let us know !!

Victory Day 2004 Moscow Tour

Now, it is time to register.
Stephende, Rusty : do you confirm your interest ?
Others : are you interested in ?

I open the following registering list : if you are seriously interested in the project, please sign in ! I will keep this Registering list updated.

Many thanks.

Victory Day parade

Hello

I have had the opportunity to see Moscows Victory Parade in 2002. I have seen others in other cities.

It was great to see, but forewarn it is difficult to get a spot to see it as it is completley blocked off for several blocks around red sqaure. The only place you can see it is on the bridge the crosses the Moscow river towards the Rossiya Hotel, which is across from Saint Basils Church. But to get there you have to take the Metro that gets you to the Lenin Library by the Water Tower which is the entrance for goverment cars. Walk over the Great stone bridge to the other side of the moscow river and walk down to the other stone bridge, where you could see the parade come out of red square and they go down to the front of the Rossiya Hotel, and some of the groups would pass right by you on the stone bridge.

You must take the Metro to the Lenin Library as other Metros will not get you there as they are closed in certain sections.

It is the only place to see it from unless you bribe a cop or have a special pass. Forget about getting into Red Square or even close for a look.

Note there is no military hardware displayed anymore or planes flying over head.

If you have any questions fell free to contact me.

Victory parade

Glad to help.

When I get a chance I will look up for you what name (color) of metro line you need to take and name of what stop to get off at.
And the name of the bridge your allowed to stand on and watch the parade from.

I suspect if you book your room at the Rossiya Hotel during the parade event you will then get to stand on the Hotels property that faces Red square and watch the parade from there. It s great spot to see it from if your a guest of the Hotel. Hotel rates start at $80usd per night. This might be your best solution as in Russia what you can do one day you can't the next, so just because you could see the parade from where I did, you may not be allowed next time. If you have been to Russia you would understand this.

Talk to you later.

Do they no longer have the "march of veterans" down Tverskaya Ulitsa? I was there in 1996 and I didn't even bother with Red Square. Having thousands of veterans wearing all their awards walking down the street was by far enough for me!

I was actually thinking of making a trip over for this next year's parade, though I am not sure if I can with my class schedules. I'll have to play that one by ear as we get closer to the date.

Dave,

I would be more than delighted if we can meet on this occasion. Please, let me know it, and if you're a candidate to this event... don't hesitate to register yourself...
We'll need to organize ourselves quite quickly now, I'm afraid.

Cheers.

Advice

Hi I was in Moscow on the victory day this year 2003. Some good advice. If you want to see the veterans go to the opposite side of the Kremblin the day before in the afternoon to the unknown soldiers grave and the Zhukov statue and look at the veterans when they put down red pimpernels( i think it´s the flowers name in english) togather with the communist youth. It´s very nice. Also be up very early and go to Zhukov statue on victory day. There are high militaries going there all day. Be at hotel Rossija early i the morning. The best look you get of the victory parade is when all troops comes parading and singing to the square below the red square right outside the hotel. If you want to see Lenin be out very early in the morning and forget one day before and one after victory parade. As mentioned before, rules realy change everyday and sometimes several times during the day. The militia put up fences with guards and moves the around all day. It´s impossible to get up on the square on victory day.
As previously noted; feel free to contact me if there is anything i can help with. When you are in moscow please remember that Kubinka tank museeum outside moscow and Monino air force museeum, both in military areas and of limit in usual occations are open for registered guests on these days close to victory day and they are well worth a visit.
Best

Sovvisor,

Many thanks for these valuable comments.
If you all continue in the same direction with so precise and etailed comments, it will be as if I had already been there, without leaving Paris. You make this trip becoming to me more and more "exciting".

But, for the time being, I'm still alone to plan to go there... Any candidate joining me for this Victory Day 2004 Moscow Tour ?

Still no answer, no candidate for this Victory 2004 Moscow Trip...
For those discovering only now this thread, or waiting for deciding, please, don't hesitate to post here if you interested... This project is "serious".

Cheers.

Victory Day

You might try getting in touch with the Russian Military Historical Society using your search engine (I can't seem to find their web-site address). They are associated with active duty officers and seem to be in the business of arranging military tours. They evidently will put you up in a military hotel and would surely arrange transportation and the proper passes to get you where ever you might want to go. They say they will even meet you at the airport! With the right passes and an escort you can go anywhere. It sounds like a great idea but I will be in Egypt and Jordan at the time.

Dr Bob,

Many thanks. Great suggestion. I will look at this. If you have any additional suggestion, please, don't hesitate to post them or PM them to me.
It is a pity that you will be travelling at this time... but that's life !!

More than one month passed since my last post... and still no candidate for joining me in this Victory 2004 Moscow Trip...
But the project is all except abandoned !!

For those discovering only now this thread, or waiting for deciding, please, don't hesitate to post here if you interested...

Having got until now no positive response, I make here a last attempt... before having to plan and organize it on a solo basis.

If you wish to do with me this Victory 2004 Moscow Trip, please, don't hesitate to post here if you interested in !!

In advance, many thanks.

Cheers.

Ch.
