List,

The following helmet is not Soviet, it is an postwar Polish helmet. I cannot offer an opinion on the question of the seller knowing this or not. Looks like someone is bidding on what seems to them to be a bargain priced Ssh-39. :hurl

The differences are numerous and begin with the leather chinstrap. Second the liner is not correct for the early leather lined Ssh-39. The latter seem to universally be in a buff white leather with nine tongues regardless of size. (At least 56-60 as those I have viewed;the 56 I own). The metal eyelets at the apex of the tongues are not found in the Soviet helmets of this type either

Yes, that is exactly the same kind of "Soviet" helmet that I bought, as pictured in the thread "Soviet WWII helmet?"

Of course, I only got hosed to the tune of $60, not $79...

Leather liners were made, that is a fact. The problem is that few have ever seen an original. Now there is a good source to make "new" originals from, the Clawson book. This type have to be treated with much caution, just like inspecting a tractor Lenin.

I will not comment on geunine/fake on this type of liner just from photos. I think they need a hands-on-treatment to say anything about if they are genuine.

Bryan,

Per our offline discussion, again this liner is the initial Ssh-36 liner type. The felt and leather composition liner is prone to falling apart even with out using the helmet... that's how poor a design it was. It is not unusual to run into these with liners that are coming apart, with dry leather, but otherwise in unissued condition. I think this is likely because the issue of these liners stopped and the helmets were placed in reserves. You do not see many with actual field use because most all fell apart.
