Medal "For Volunteers Of The Liberation 1877-1878".

The Medal "For Volunteers Of The Liberation 1877-1878" (Медал „На Ополченцитѣ За Освобождението 1877–1878“) was founded on 19th July 1880 to be awarded to forces that participated in the Bulgarian liberation campaign of the Russo-Ottoman war. Around 40,000 Bulgarians participated in the uprisings and liberation of Bulgaria but the number of Medals awarded will have been considerably less.
The Medal is made of bronze and is inscribed with the Knjaz's insignia, the date of institution and the battles Stara Zagora, Shipka and Shejnovo.

This particular Medal retains some of its original 5 sided ribbon and its original leather kolodka, a very rare survivor.

Here is a finer example which has shed its ribbon and kolodka.
