Yes - it's a MUST, but a moderator to it is a must too.

could be
Hi Alexei
heheh. Yep it could be a fake. The letters are a bit unclear, but its the first version, low number and unless I have a comparable number..I'll keep my options open. It compares exactly witht he XV. Yes thats why we need a forum on this, the info out there is hard to find but I'm sure it's there. Cheers Chris |

Great Idea
I think, "Badges" section is a great idea. From my experience, most of advanced collectors "discover" badges after they reach a monetary limit in their order and medal collections (usually right before or after Kutuzov, Suvorov, Khmelnitski 3rd class) and get bored with variations. Badges provide almost limitless and at times poorly researched to date field rich with discoveries even at $25 level! I am a big badge fan and ready to share my knowledge.
I just sold a small collection of very early 1918-1919n "Hammer and Plow" badges some of which were absolutely stunning. Here is one example: Dmitry |

spot on
Hi
Yes you are spot on, I started to buy badges just the odd one or two for the exact reasons you mention. They are rich in history and mainly quite cheap. A lot are not particularly researched. (my opinion) Please see a couple I picked up for around the 10 dollar mark...pre 45 mainly, awarded during the great change Chris. |

Badge Forum
Guys,
Okay, here is what I propose. In order to keep the forum going strong I will create a badge forum, with 3 relevant sub-forums which will be determined by everyone in this ( General Talk ) forum. My knowledge on badges is next to nothing, so I'm sitting this one out. You guys will have to come up with the name of the new forum and the three sub-forums, and a small description of the forum and its sub-forums ( as seen below all the forums ). When everyone is 100% happy with the new badge forum hierarchy I kindly ask my moderators to post the new hierarchy with all it's information in the administration forum. You can take as long as you like. Also, with the new forums comes more attachments ( images ) I have to start watching the image posting. I know you all are probably sick of hearing me talk about it ( me too ) but if some of you have been in the forum when people are posting images, you know what I mean. Everytime the forum gets super-busy with uploading attachments, or displaying attachments, you will get an error message ( the white screen giving you an error message and saying that the forum has emailed me ) so, I will need to impose new file size limits. 70K maximum for attachments, and I will need to impose an image width restriction to keep images neat within the forum display. So what sayeth you? Art

Art,
I am not sure I like the "Republic Badge", I think they wouldl be covered by other categories. Maybe it's better to rename "Profession Badges" to Non-Military with subdivisions into Labor and Political. Also we seem to be forgetting Military Sports Badges, Hat Badges Alexei Quote:

I have a pretty good idea
OK, I was thinking about it for several months now and actually am working on a hierarchy for all various types of badges. As a top level I have:
1. Military Badges (For Excellence, Events, Qualification, Graduation, Membership, Veterans and Rank) 2. Security Forces (NKVD, MVD, KGB, Police, Border Guards, Firemen, Druzhinnik, etc) 3. Voluntary Organizations (DOSAAF, PVHO, OSOAVIAHIM, Red Cross, etc) 4. Labor Badges (Udarniki, Otlichniki, etc.) 5. Political Badges (Young Communist organizations, Komsomol, Communist Party, Deputee badges, Dedicated to Leaders of USSR, etc.) 6. Sport Badges 7. Academy and University Graduation badges 8. (?) Anniversary badges (can be attributed to another category such as Military anniversary, political anniversary, etc.) 9. (?) Zhetons, not a category per se, but some people collect just zhetons 10. (?) Table Medals not badges at all, but an interesting category on its own I believe that first 7 categories are major and need to be represented. The true acid test is to look at the badges in your collection and see if they fit into one of the 7 categories I set up . Feedback will be appreciated Dmitry |

Badge Forum
I agree with the comments posted here -- a badge forum is an excellent idea. I believe most medal collectors also branch out into badges, as many of them are awards as well.
