Avers 8 and recent price hikes...?

What are the prices like for ORS, BM, etc. in Avers 8? I understand that this recent edition may be the reason why prices doubled in the outlaying areas of the former Soviet Union almost overnight about four months ago.

Hi,

There is no orders and medals (those of Avers 6 or the PMD) in this book.

Cheers.

Thanks for the heads-up Christophe.

I just called a friend in Moscow to get a copy. He checked online and told me that he can get one but it is 7,000 rubles. Wow. I love good reference books and I'd really like to have a comprehensive badge book, but at $300 I'll have to give it some thought. When Avers-6 came out at $100 I balked but bought it anyway. But $300?!

Has anyone actually seen this book yet? Is there a review anywhere?

If you had told me when I started collecting that I would even consider paying $300 for a badge book I would have collected bottle caps instead.

Guess I'll have to order one but is it just me, or is all this getting even crazier? Lets see, 2500 copies x $300 = $750,000. For pictures of badges. $0.41/page? Nope, crazy for sure, but can I afford not to?

I agree $300 may seem a lot, but...

When I bought the PMD in 1997, I also found that $95 (in 1997...) was a huge price!!! But I thought it was an investment, and I never regretted it!!!! :thumbsup

Keep in mind that all these books are expensive in Russia, specifically the recent ones with a good quality print, whcih is the case of the Avers 8. Looks into the threads of this sub-forum : there are a number of books around $200... The low tirage they have may also explain this...

Because they are quite rare; when I see a new one, please, believe in me, I don't hesitate a lot and take it. For your information, in the bookshop where I bought it in Moscow (address by PM if you're interested) there were 4 in total, and we were 2 guys "discovering it"... But 2,500 copies is quite a decent tirage that should make it to be easily found.

About the book itself : Except a few texts in introduction of the chapters, generally with pics of bearers or docs, there is no "real" text in explanation. It is more a catalog of all these znakis and "medals" with nice pics (often obverse and reverse), dates or period and prices. In my opinion, an interesting book in complement of more "historical" others... A fantastic source of pics (maybe 5,000 of them...).

Cheers.

Ch.

Guys,

I have always taken a somewhat dim view of the Avers series, especially since what they show is not always original. When you put it all together, I personally have a problem shelling out this type of money for such a book.
