Bulgarian Awards Rarity And Value.

After years of collecting and observing Bulgarian awards I have collected a vast array of knowledge on the subject. The People's Republic Of Bulgaria's awards are very often seen as "second place" to Soviet awards and many collectors priced out of the Soviet award market switch to Bulgarian awards. The price of Bulgarian awards peaked just prior to the energy crisis that hit the country after a dispute with Russia. Many of the higher end awards' values are inflated by metal content, although some are still not valued beyond their metal content. During and after the energy crisis in Bulgaria the prices of Bulgarian awards have dropped and it is unlikely they will be recovering in the near future. Often "warehouses" of unawarded decorations come onto the market from time to time and when they do a decoration that was very rarely awarded can turn up on the market in very large numbers and in perfect condition. As during the history of the PRB there were no combative conflicts involving the country in a combative role nearly all PRB awards are commemorative, or for merits/service with the exception of Medals "International Brigade Spain 1936-1939", "For Participation In The September Uprising 1923" and "For Participation In The Anti-Fascist Struggle", although the latter Medal was awarded for merit in the later years of the regime.

Once again I will use the main site's rarity guide and the price given is for "naked" undocumented awards.

A-Abundant, readily available, often in wholesale quantities.
C-Common, always available. Occasionally in quantity.
R1-Usually available without a long delay. Difficult to find in quantity.
R2-Scarce to rare, less seldom available.
R3-Rare. Difficult to find.
R4-Very rare. Demand outstrips supply, and specimens, when
available are often eagerly sought.
R5-Extremely rare and seldom available. Collector may have to
search for a few years to locate one.
R6-Of the highest rarity. Very difficult to obtain.
R7-Almost never available. Most collectors will not have a chance to acquire these pieces.

Re: Bulgarian Awards Rarity And Value.

I'll happily take any quantities of the orders of the Staraya Planina (all classes, but especially so the higher ones) or of the Rose at melt value (hint, hint ;))

Re: Bulgarian Awards Rarity And Value.

I have been offered them (even below melt) but I have NEVER seen a document for either of them, Documents for many of the higher awards are very obscure but the actual decorations were made in bulk and stored, the stores empty bit by bit. I have come across 1 Document for the Order "13 Centuries Of Bulgaria" which someone beat me to but it did not go for anywhere near the value of the actual order. As with collecting awards of any nations the real appeal is in large documented groups including the highest awards, many of these have been split and even melted in the case of Bulgarian awards, somewhat devaluing the remainder of the group. I picked up my unnumbered Order "Georgi Dimitrov" with document for $750 which at the time was $50 under melt value and my 23 Karat Laureate Of The International Botev Prize for £485 and now not too far down the road it is worth £725 in Metal. My Order "13 Centuries Of Bulgaria" (which is production numbered #13) also cost me £485 and it is now also worth over £700 in metal (125 grams of silver before you start with the gold content). If you are paying much over Metal content for the higher awards without original documents/cases you're basically paying too much. The documents are the game changers.

P.S. I do have a LONG length of original "Stara Platina" Sash ribbon that I got for cost just in case I need to replace some later.... Bulgaria still awards them.....

Re: Bulgarian Awards Rarity And Value.

Excellent list but I have to disagree with your valuations. From experience of collecting Bulgarian for several years I believe prices are rising but very slowly. For example you state the Order of the Rose is only melt value.I have one and can honestly say that I have never seen another on the market so must be worth more than the value of the metal.
I think what knocked the values was when the Bulgarian government sold off a load of stuff a few years ago leading to a glut on the market but prices have settled down and are going up.
Just my humble opinion.

Re: Bulgarian Awards Rarity And Value.

The place where you have the best chance to get the higher end awards at melt value is in Sofia, when the government let a batch out. When the high end awards flood out most of the dealers do not have the funds to corner the market and melt value is all that is achieved. The last time I was offered an Order Of The Rose was 2 years ago but I didn't have the instant funds, otherwise I would have bought it for under Melt. Sofia really is the place to get the deals. Lots of the dealers do work closely with one another and sometimes an item can do the rounds between dealers for some time. During the energy crisis I had "begging letters" from more than one Bulgarian dealer requesting that I take as many items off of their hands as quickly as possible for very little money and I did buy some of them. With many of the more common commemorative medals once you have paid for postage you will never break even if you have to sell them on. Having good relationships with dealers and haggling is a sure route to getting better prices. Right place and time helps too.

P.S. I bought my Botev Prize and Order "13 Centuries" when the market was at the highest prices, since then gold has really taken off and perverted the value.
