Re: Where to find Soviet medals in La Havana (Cuba) ?

As far as I know, with a bit of luck you can find some cuban medals, badges and discarded FAR uniforms/headgear at flea markets now that some of the reforms are taking place, but unfortunately I´ve got no addresses to share with you. About soviet awards, I had one of my relatives look for them when they went there, but didn´t found any. You can find good quality cigars, rum and Che Guevara merchandising by the thousands for little cash, but awards and militaria are very scarce. Remember that markets are still not so that open, so a dealer may be the most difficult thing to find.

Hope you enjoy your trip to Cuba! Cubans are very friendly and will be willing to help you in any way (at least in my personal experience). If you have any problems with their spanish just let me know.

Re: Where to find Soviet medals in La Havana (Cuba) ?

I went to Cuba 2 years ago with the intention of looking for medals etc but didn't see anything worth buying. There were a few indoor markets about but most goods for sale could only be described as tourist junk.Like most people all over there are good and bad but most were friendly.

Re: Where to find Soviet medals in La Havana (Cuba) ?

Hello Christophe,
I've been to Holguin (Guardalavaca) three times and to Santiago de Cuba once and never saw anything soviet. I am planning a trip to Varadero soon and I will make sure to go one day to La Havana. Did you go there? I am hoping that if there is anything soviet in Cuba, it should be in La Havana.

However, I must admit that I have seen much more Russian and Ukrainian people in Dominican Republic than in Cuba. And knowing people from Cuba don't travel much, I would think the circulation of soviet stuff after the breakup was very very limited.

Anyhow, if anybody has found a place where to get soviet stuff in Cuba, I would be happy to hear. Otherwise, I will still spend another pleasant week at the beach, dancing and drinking!

Cuban awards are obtainable, but you have to have the right contacts. Taking them out of the country may present a problem.

I've been in Cuba several times and travelled all over the country - by train, boat, car, bus and even on horseback. I love that country, but of course it helps a lot when you speak Spanish.

Re: Where to find Soviet medals in La Havana (Cuba) ?

I made a 4 week trip through Cuba in 1998:
a) people were very nice
b) food was indeed horrible (chicken, without any actual chicken meat in it...)

What i found is that a LOT of cubans i met could e.g. speak German because they had worked/lived in Germany (or so they said). It might be that you have more likelhood to find Cuban awards in Germany than Soviet in Cuba?

Re: Where to find Soviet medals in La Havana (Cuba) ?

There was a BBC documentary called "Future Of Food" stating that Cuba is one of three main influences on the future of food.... I think I'd have to have more of the Hemmingway diet.

where should I look for collectibles items ?

Hi everybody !!!

since now I got all my badges via eBay and all went alright...

anyway, is there any other way to get them?
how do you find items elsewhere?

I guess planning a trip to Moscow could be a right idea, but I am not able to move there at the moment, is there anything else?
Something like auctions magazines, websites, anything else different from eBay? I only found some websites showing items already sold (why don't they delete those advices?)

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

cheers

Go to any search engine and type in soviet awards for sale and you should find a few places. If your going to russia i would advice you to be careful being that it is illegal to bring orders and medals out of the country.
