Here's a question...
The Russian map case so widely used through 1940s to 1970's....
The triangle snap pouch in the upper right corner...what is this for?

The straps down the middle hold the wrist compass.

The snap compartment area I'm talking about is too small for that, and is located in the upper right cornor. The flap itself is open to allow something to stck out but not fall out. Its sort of triangluar in shape. Thanks

Here is a pic of my map case which shows this small pocket. I think it might be for a tool for measuring distance on a map. Not sure of the correct name for this?

Cheers, Ade.

I agree with Ade. It's an instrument with a little rotating wheel used to measure distances on the map. I've also seen a square eraser stuck in there too.

Try clothes designers, they use it all the time as they need to know not only your shoulder lengths but also the circumference. Damn, I forgot the Russian name for this wheely device - a protractor? Something like this? Probably not.
Growing old, sorry.

Guys,

Yep, you are right, it is definitely for that "thingy" to measure distance on maps. Sorry, the old brain did probably switch itself off for a while.

I believe the Russian name for it would be Kurvimetr.
