Red Star,0002657,Military Engineer,4th Mechanised Brigade,Spain 1936

Here is an interesting low # Red Star that was awarded in 1937 for Spain. Lapa (Marc) may recognized it from another forum when I was trying to find out information about it. Unlike the WW2 awards, there is no citation available but I was able to locate the Ukaz for the awarding from 1937 and with that name, researched the person. The particular awardee was also awarded an Order of the Red Banner for actions again in Spain (you can see the awards in his Bio.) I have included his Biography Sheet as well as the Ukaz for the Red Star awarding. He certainly had an interesting career, including being tossed out of the Communist Party in 1945.

Ukaz for Award (included in Ukaz were 5 Order of Lenins, 198 ORBs, 285 ORSs)

On awarding the commanders, political workers, engineers and technicians of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army.

Excellent! Thanks for posting.

I wonder if "Second Deputy Chief Red Army Repair and Automotive Exploitation Direcorate 12.4.42" has something to do with lend lease equipment. I've seen an award sheet to a chief in a "Technical Exploitation Section" who was responsible for figuring out systems on lend lease aircraft (including translating documentation from English to Russian).

Re: Red Star,Spain,2657

Auke,

I do not have the order book but it was researched by number for the name and from there, the Ukaz's could be searched to see when it was awarded. I obviously did not do the research so if anyone knows anything else on the subject, please let me know. It was just luck that Glukhov survived the war so he had official records that could be found.

Here are a couple pictures of the award as well as the awardee and his award card. It would be nice to know where the ORB #972 is!

Great that he received additional awards, otherwise there wouldn't have been a record card and the research would probably have been dead end.

Nice star!

I like the conversion to pinback. It really gives the award a personal touch and signifies that the awardee wanted to wear it often and in comfort. :thumbsup A real survivor, too.

So do I because it can be worn on anything without ruining a sports or suit jacket by punching a hole in it. Maybe this guy ended up in the diplomatic corps because they were some of the first to recognize the usefulness of pins over screws for wearing awards on more than one suit (uniform or other).

It almost looks like someone took a medal suspension plate and cut out the pin and clasp portion of the suspension and then used the portion of the screw that wasn't cut off and a nut to hold it in place. Neat use of resources at hand.:thumbsup

Re: Red Star,0002657,Military Engineer,4th Mechanised Brigade,Spain 1936

The 4th Mechanised Brigade was re-designated the 32th Light Tank Brigade in 1938.

As of 1936 the Brigade had 193 T-26 Tanks of various types (the vast majority of their force). This would mean that he was most likely working on the T-26s in Spain. The main battle tank of the war, which would soon be made obsolete and rather ineffective by Great Patriotic War standards (although it would be difficult to call one ineffective if faced by one without anti-tank weaponry).

Here is an example being worked on in Moscow the same time he would have been working on them in the BSSR.
