ericlida,

how do you function on no kidneys? You just have sold one or a kid to pay for those orders. DANG!

Here's my small collection of Soviet orders and medals. Top half is labour and lower half is military (eventually they will be separate displays). What I need to do now is to buy a display case to put academy badges in (which have been my focus recently). This case is kind of neat. It has a thick soft foam pad in it with a piece of black felt on top. The awards get pressed in between the foam and the glass, so they don't have to be mounted in any way. This makes it really nice if I want to rearrange the awards or just take them out and look at them--I can just open the case and move them around without having to unpin them. I've included a picture of an award with the suspension flipped over to show this.

I really like this thread and have gotten some ideas from it. Seeing all these pictures of people's display cases really helped me resolve the dilemma of whether to go with red or black felt. I ended up with black, because, as someone else in this thread said (sorry; I forget who), Soviet awards tend to have a lot of red in them anyway and seem to stand out better against black. But I'm planning on getting red for the academy badge display.

It's funny; I keep my own (US Army) awards that I earned in their boxes in a closet, but I have all these awards belonging to (possibly dead) Soviet citizens who I've never met in a display case on the wall. I guess that I feel a greater sense of obligation to take care of those people's awards. I think that that sense of responsibility is part of what makes collecting interesting for me.

Sorry for the quality of the photos. I had some trouble getting them down to < 50k.

Outstanding display

I like how you have used the non mounting concept and the way you have spread them out

Just wanted to share what I've done with a couple of researched Orders of Glory III.

Hope you all enjoy

Brendan

January,
You are too modest . I've only just noticed, in the first photo, the bottom left corner, is that a pair of Hero Stars hanging off something like a pelican beak or animal horns?

Thank you!

Good catch--the Gold Stars are repros (the HSL actually has the same serial as Doc Riley's), and it's an ashtray. I bought them orignally as filler, but couldn't justify the idea of putting fakes into the same display case as real awards, so they ended up being part of an ashtray. I was going to put the HSU on a uniform, but the screwpost fell apart.

I think that the birds might be hummingbirds. Could just as easily be pelicans, though.
