Greater Poland Cross Of Insurgency.
(Wielkopolski Krzyz Powstanczy)
This cross was instituted by decree of the State Council on February 1st, 1957. It was awarded to vererans of the Great Poland insurrection (powstanie wielkopolskie) of 1918 against Germany / Prussia, this resulted in the city of Poznan and the area of the former Grand Duchy of Poznan being returned to Poland. It is a bronze Greek cross with the dimentions of 36 x 36 mm. The obverse has the dates 1918 on the left, and 1919 on the right arms. Top to bottom there is a pointed down sword. The center has a white enameled, non-crowned eagle on a red background surrounded by an oak wreath. On the reverse are the letters PRL (RP since 1991) in the center, with the inscription POWSTANCOM : WIELKOPOLSKIM (to the insurgents of Great Poland).

I would just add that apart from partly successful silesian uprisings, The Wielkopolskie Uprising was the only succesful one in a long histry of polish uprisings.
Btw. The veterans of this upprising who joined a ZBoWiD veteran assosiation also received a nice uniform, based on the ones worn by the insurgents during the uprising, but with post 1945 ranks and buttons. I would have inherited such uniform after my great-grandfather, but unfortunately he refused to join the organisation because of personal dislike for ZBoWiD long-time president, general M. Moczar. Well, rightfully so I presume... |
