Fund Of Saint Vasilij The Great Gold Medal.

Do you know this medal? I'm sure, not...

This award was presented to Igor Girkin by Malofeyev's Charitable Foundation of St. Basil the Great because Girkin was among "those who made the greatest personal contribution to the Crimean events of 2014."

Igor Girkin (war name Strelkov) is the Russian former commander of militants in eastern Ukraine.
In need of money he is selling this gold medal he was awarded in 2014 for his role in the occupation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula.

The award was given to him in the spring of 2014 by Russian billionaire Konstantin Malofeyev, a key figure linking the pro-Russian forces on the ground in eastern Ukraine to the political establishment in Moscow.

The auction will take place on April 13 at Moscow's StandArt Hotel. It says the starting bid is 1 million rubles, or about $15,000.

The gold medal includes the inscription "In memory of the reunification of the Crimea with Russia in 2014," with Putin's profile on the front and a map of Crimea on the back.

Ch.

You'll say it's because I'm French, but it is really a napoleonic design...

This piece reminds me of this other political piece. Lots of hype, self congratulatory but at the end of the day, pretty meaningless (although not worthless, these sell for $250+ now because of that hype and unusual design).

Well, he was inspired by the ancient Romans, and this is where I would look for the inspiration here. After all, the Russian tsars saw themselves as the continuators of the (East) Roman Empire.

The list is long of those sovereigns who dreamt of copying the Caesars... Charles the Great, the german emperors, Byzance of course...
