Conventions And Shows.

I know we don't have a lot of people from the UK on this board, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any military shows/fairs where you can buy Russian medals here in the UK?

I'm sure this question, if I removed the UK bit, would be of interest to everyone. So if there are any big US military shows (or where ever) that sell Russian medals/orders, then I'm sure people would like to hear about them.

Kind Regards,
Shane Cook.

Military shows

The only one I really know of in New Jersey is the American Eagle Collectors Show in Totowa, NJ... a little far from England though.

They have a show every other month the next being June 8. Along with many general military sellers, there are 3 major Soviet Medals sellers that always have tables set up every time I have been there.

I'm not sure if I'm aloud to mention their names here, but if I did, I am sure we would all be familiar with the names.

Excellent show and for a $3.00 admission, what a bargain !

Let me know if anyone plans to be there on June 8.

In New Jersey SU-awards are cheaper

I think currently SU-awards are cheaper in the US, than in Russia - or you will have to visit some meritorious veterans in their humble flats with a pistol in your hand and shout: "Your awards, photographs and booklets (documented groups!) or your life!".

To survive in post-socialistic Russia as a human being (without relatives in that country), used to a certain standard of living, is extremly expensive (hotel, dinners, wine, cigars ....) and running around with some bucks for buying medals, you will need some bodyguards around you.

So, if Tal comes up for the price differnce at the awards-market and for the hughe extra-costs concerning good living + security in Russia vs. USA, we shall accept his proposal.

It's a romantic idea for us to visit Russia, but it might cost us fortune!

Regards from Vienna

NJ military show

The location for the Totowa show on June 8 is in the Totowa PAL Building, in Totowa. It's from 9:00 - 3:00. For directions and information, you can call a guy named Dave at 973-790-8203.

Thanks Rick, I think I know the place, it's the one on Lincoln Ave and Chamberlain Ave, right?
See you there on June 8th (BTW, it's good that it's ending at 3pm, since there is Lewis/Tyson
fight later on...

Trip to Russia

Dear colleagues,

While the idea of traveling to Russia to acquire awards and other collectables sounds appealing at first, there are some dangers in doing so.

Besides above mentioned safety concerns and high prices, the real threat is in current Russian laws. As far as I know - it is ILLEGAL to buy or sell any Soviet/Russian awards.

Even if we manage to buy awards in Moscow (which can be easily done) - we will not be able to export them outside ot the country (as they will be confiscated at the customs), and we can be facing criminal prosecution...

On my recent trip to Moscow I talked to some of the local dealers and the reality is that one can buy almost anything, but the real problem is smuggling the stuff from Russia. I just did not want the trouble...

As I understand it, most of the awards come out through the Baltic states, before going to the west.

Kind Regards,

I wouldn't think it necessary to have things come out through the Baltics. Besides, one would still have to go through both Russian and Baltic customs. The airport is not the only point of entry or exit...

Hello,

I am going to Russia in August, specifically to Moscow and Irkutsk. Does anyone know exactly what the rules are with regard to what items can be legally taken out of Russia? I know that the older and more expensive medals are out of the question, but what about veteran's badges and this type of thing. And what about bringing documents out of Russia, would you get arrested for trying to bring out award documents? I think that many countries have a limit on how old an item can be for it to be taken from the country. I would be surprised if they would stop you from taking some low level award from 1989. But I would like to know what the rules are so I do not get into trouble. Also, if I want to see some items in Moscow or Irkutsk, does anyone have any recommendations?
I do not intend on smuggling anything, but how do they search for these items at the Russian border? I would imagine that they mostly search for these items at airport security, but I will be crossing the border on a train.

Thanks,
Keith
