I'm glad you did because it made for very interesting reading.:thumbsup I had no idea these were around and I guess the final word from Alexei about them being custom jobs for a particular unit is the generally accepted reason for their existence?

I would lean toward a private purchase embellishment. Just a quick scan of these shows a "N", "P", and a "Shch" serial number prefixes. I assume a "unit" order would have closer serial number series.

Phillip,

Apparently, these were the early awards. Later on, as the numbers awarded grew, it was felt that simpler documents were in order, and they got rid of the had cover.

Marc, we'll see. The only caveat is I took this out of deep storage just to photograph and post. It's been years and by the next time I get back you may have found your own :)

Also, I took the photos in harsh sunlight. From the other other examples posted you can see that the bottom of the cover reads "For the Defense of Leningrad" and is not just yellow staining.

After years looking for one of these my patience had paid off given its pristine condition. I know I probably paid too much, but if you have to ask how much something costs you probably can't afford it anyway. Enjoy!

It was awarded to Captain Lieutenant Georgiy Stepanov, a Naval Officer (!), on July 4th, 1943.
