Legal profession badges and insignia
Here are some of the badges and insignia I dug up in response to a request from a new member.
I am not sure about which law enforment branch some of the MVD academy badges fall under, but they have the crossed swords. The first two are 50th anniversary badges of the Military Tribunals and then of the Soviet Procurator's Office. (Someone carved "1211" on the back of this one and I doubt it was officially done.)

Re: Legal profession badges and insignia
Here are two different collar tab insignia from the legal department. Obviously the one on the left is the newer version. The one on the right looks like it should be from the 1940s or 50s, but feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken.:)
Does anybody know if the number of rivets in the shield can be used to determine age or any other information? I ask because I just noticed there are more in the newer version. Phillip

CSI Moscow?
I'm kidding about Moscow because I don't believe this badge was made in any of the factories/mints there. The quality of the details is too low.
However, I found this piece "simply irresistible" a while back on ePay (my apologies if the other person bidding on it was a forum member). Though the Soviets loved their acronyms, they did not have CSIs; this one was for a "Forensic Medical Expert." I have to assume that is a shield with the crossed swords of the justice branch, though the quality really isn't very good. It is, however, a heavy brass piece so age may be a factor in that. Phillip P.S. I tried to crop the pictures to have "larger" images, but I'm running into errors probably because the battery was near dead when I took the original photos.

Re: Legal profession badges and insignia
Another new addition (same seller) to my "Justice League" collection.
I had to pick it up because I rarely find medals for this section of law enforcement. This would be the logically "cheap" version of the successor to the 50th anniversary badge in post #1. Which reminds me: does anybody know if people are faking the 50th anniversary of the Public Prosecutor's Office? I ask because I am seeing an increasing number of these on eBay for lower and lower prices. (Note: same problem with these photos as in the previous post so I could not adjust exposure, color or size). Phillip

Re: Legal profession badges and insignia
I know this badge is for the the Kharkov Soviet Law Institute, but I cannot find one like it in my resources. Moreover, the hilt of the sword, with its turned or angled pommel, is unlike the other swords on Soviet era awards or badges I've seen. It seems more like a Cossack-type handle.
In addition, the obverse appears to have a layer of lacquer over it, but the somewhat crude reverse makes it look older (notwithstanding what seems to be a repaired pin). There are no mint marks that I can see so I have no idea when this was made. Even "guesses" would be appreciated.:D Phillip

Re: Legal profession badges and insignia
This one is really sad - but rather inventive. The makers took the basic 30th "XXX" anniversary of the victory in the GPW and the medallion portion has a small hole in the center. Next, they take a collar tab insignia from any branch - in this case justice - and insert it, and as you can see, used its own screwnut to hold it in place. They were selling for $1 each and I know they are "touristy," but this is the only one I need because if I need a different type, I'll just change the insignia.:chuckle
