British Awards Bestowed On Red Army Personnel During World War II

And here's another photo, from the 60's of MSU Moskalenko, proudly wearing his British OBE, directly under his Hero star! Nothing discreet about that one!

Looks like a KBE to me, with the breast star below. A neck badge worn as a breast badge. Yes, ostentation!

Apparently neck badges were a line not to be crossed. Recall the famous picture of Z with his KCB worn as a breast badge.

British Awards Bestowed On Red Army Personnel During World War II

To all:

On 12 July 1945, Field Marshal Montgomery, acting on behalf of the King George Vi, presented honorary British knighthoods to the following Red Army officers:

Marshal of the Soviet Union Zhukov; Commander, 1st Belorussian Front - Knight Grand Cross of The Most Honourable Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)

Marshal of the Soviet Union Rokossovskiy; Commander, 2nd Belorussian Front - Knight Commander of The Most Honourable Order of the Bath (K.C.B.)

General of the Army Sokolovskiy; Deputy Commander, 1st Belorussian Front - Knight Commander of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.)

Colonel General Malinin; Chief of Staff, 1st Belorussian Front - Knight Commander of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.)

The ceremony took place in the heart of shattered Berlin directly underneath the Brandenburg Gate. The Kings Company of the Grenadier Guards formed the Guard of Honor with tanks of the Kings 8th Royal Irish Hussars drawn up on either side.

If you look closely at any M1945 Victory Parade uniform photo of MSU Vasilevskiy (Commander, 3rd Belorussian Front as well as Commander of one of the two fronts committed against the Japanese in August 1945) you will notice the breast star for the Knight Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (G.B.E.).

As Dave has pointed out, MSU Moskaleneko was awarded the Knight Commander of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Regards,

slava1stclass

Zhukov with red sash

I was watching a History Channel documentary about Hitler´s death in 1945, affair which concerned a lot to Marshal Zhukov, who appeared several times during the program. Well, in June or July 1945 approx, during a gathering of British, US and Soviet forces in Berlin, Germany, Marshal Zhukov appeared with his green everyday uniform, his three HSUs and a big red sash, as well as other soviet officers who were with him(one of them was with a big red "neck-sash", but I couldn´t distinguish the award). So what was this big red sash? Unfortunately I don´t have pics to show, however, the film was not so good and I was only able to see the guy with the red stuff...¬_¬

Greetings,
Esteban

In the thread entitled "Zhukov picture", you will see a display of all his (Georgi Zhukov's) awards. In the bottom of the display, second from the left next to the American Bronze Star, is a French Order of the Legion d'Honeur. I believe this version (and I am not THAT familiar with French awards, but I think it may be an Order of a Knight of the Legion of Honor) was worn won the left hip, suspended from a wide, red sash over the right shoulder. Again, I am NO authority on French awards, but it seems a logical deduction.

One last observation: I think I saw the program in question, and I believe it was filmed on the date he received this award from the French nation, hence the everyday uniform, instead of the parade uniform.

The Real Story

To all:

The below information is from my earlier post under "The Researchers' Corner" entitled: "Honorary British Knighthoods Bestowed on Red Army Officers During World War II." The "red sash" accompanied Zhukov's award of Great Britain's Most Honourable Order of the Bath in the degree of Knight Grand Cross (G.C.B.). Now you know the rest of the story...

By golly, I believe we have a winner!! After comparing the suspended order on the red sash with a photo of an Order of the Bath, it seems that slava1stclass has it dead-on right. Jolly good show!!

Re: British Order awarded to Soviet pilot

He's wearing what, the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross)?
That'd be my guess from the silhouette.
