Interesting set, Taz. Thanks for sharing. I would have thought the military award would take precedence over the others. Back to the books!

Greg,
Maybe seems suprising but the service Medal is way, way down in the order of preceedence, see post #9 of this thread.

This is part of the GDR regulations.

Lower right-hand side. Interestingly, picture was taken by Trans-Caucasus command (far from DDR) in 26 July 85.

Re: Soviet colonel w/ DDR Arbeit Aktivist medal

Are there any examples of soviet military wearing Kampfgruppen awards?

Italian Garibaldi Star awarded to Soviets

Hidden away in deep storage, I have a Soviet book about Soviet soldiers, presumably POWs if my memory serves me correctly, who fought in an Italian unit, the Garibaldi" Brigade.

I recently encountered an Italian-language, blank award certificate awarding the "Stella Garibaldina al Valore" to "cittadino sovietico" (Soviet citizen). The certificate is signed by Luigi Longo who is identified as "p. il Commando generale delle Brigate d'assalto 'Garibaldi'".

Does anyone else have anything on this unit?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Italian Garibaldi Star awarded to Soviets

Here's a story of a Soviet soldier and POW who later fought in Italy, possibly in the same unit you speak of.

Garibaldi had his name thrown about quite a bit I guess. It was also the basis of the name of what I guess was the collaborationist organization for Italian POWs in Soviet captivity? See the photo found on this page - the one with the POWs in front of the bulletin board.

Re: Italian Garibaldi Star awarded to Soviets

Brigade(s) Garibaldi were one of the most important parisan groups fighting against fascists and germans in the northern italy. They were by far the larger coordinated group during the Italian Resistenza. Most of its combatants were italian comunists (enlisted in the PCI = Partito Comunista Italiano) or socialists. Luigi Longo was a commander of one of these brigades and post-war he became PCI Secretary from 1964, after Palmiro Togliatti.

A full list of the brigades (in italian) is here Brigate Garibaldi - Wikipedia
Do you know where in Italy the soldier you are talking about did fight?

The star you are mentioning should be the one derived from the american bronze star, with the portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi in the center.

ciao
sergio

Re: Italian Garibaldi Star awarded to Soviets

"Le Brigate Garibaldi ricevevano in genere ordini dal rappresentante del PCI nel Corpo volontari della libertà (CVL) e dal Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale (CLN). Ma tutte le Brigate Garibaldi dipendevano dal Comando Generale, di cui facevano parte Luigi Longo, Giorgio Amendola, Giancarlo Pajetta, Pietro Secchia e Antonio Carini."
(courtesy wikipediA)

All Brigades Garibaldi were normally receiving orders from the PCI representative in the "Volunteers for freedom" corp, and from the National Liberation Comittee. However, all the Brigades were ruled by the General Command, members of which were [among others] Luigi Longo, Giorgio Amendola, Giancarlo Pajetta, Pietro Secchia e Antonio Carini.
