Ministry Of The Armed Forces Military Soldiers' Booklets.

The Ministry Of The Armed Forces (Министерство Вооруженных Сил СССР) existed between 15th March 1946 and 25th February 1950 and for that rather short period they issued the "Soldier's books".

This example was issued to 1903 born Artillery Sergeant Nikifor Kirilovich Balan. A worker and Member of the Party from July 1943 . Born in Balanovka (must be a family stronghold) in Odessa Oblast and educated to 4th Class.

Originally conscripted by Bershatsk Regional Military Commissariat of Odessa Oblast in September 1925 to the 51st Cavalry Regiment.

Serving as a Rifleman in the 19th Guards Rifle Division 25th July 1941 to June 1943.
Serving as a "Chemical Trooper" in the 559th Rifle Regiment June 1943 to 24th June 1945.

Put into the 153th Army Reserve Regiment on 24th June 1945 and demobilised 27th July 1945.

Light wound in the spine (know how that feels!) on 25th March 1942.

Awarded with a Red Star on 25th June 1945, For Defence Of Leningrad and For Victory Over Germany.

Re: Ministry Of The Armed Forces Military Identification Booklet.

The citation for the Red Star has some slightly different information (no wound for example) but shows him as a 76mm Gun Battery Commander in the 559 Rifle Narva Regiment.

It shows his gun taking out 4 enemy gun positions in Groß-Schliwitz (now Śliwice, Wrocław County) on 19th February 1945 and then his gun holding back 8 enemy counter-attacks near "Long" on 22nd February 1945 where they took out 40 Germans.

Re: Ministry Of The Armed Forces Military Identification Booklets.

It is great that you can associate with the locations of his actions. Very frequently an exceptional act of liberation or defence will be overlooked due to the location not being familiar. I personally have no experience of Poland (yet!) but this piece really appeals to me as this states very plainly that Balan was injured in the spine. I am "in the zipper club" and can state very loudly that having anything touching my spinal scar is unpleasant let alone "action" so close to wounding. Unfortunately it doesn't state which part of the spine. I know the 12cm scar along my spin is not the preferred place for pressure, let alone crude and heavy military hardware. Working through this sort of injury makes this citation exceptional to me.

Re: Ministry Of The Armed Forces Military Soldiers' Booklets.

A document to Iosif Ivanovich Kondratko - intresting in that it lists his service in both pre-39 Polish Army and the Soviet Army.
Born in 1911, rifleman, private.

Civilian speciality - dairy technician, not a party member, not a VLKSM member, Ukrainian, Ukrainian as a mothertounge, Polish as a foreign language.
Finished 7 classes of secondary school in Yaroslav, Lvov oblast (Poland) in 1922 - the fact that they wrote "Poland" is interesting, as in Polish post-war documents those born in the territories that were part of Poland later captured by the Soviet Union usually had "USSR" as birthplace.

Service information is also interesting - called by the Polish recruitment institution (RKU) on 2.2.1932, fit for service and assigned to the 5th independant sanitary battalion.

Height 168 cm (quite average at that time), headwear size 55, gas mask size 2, footwear size 43

Service:
In the Polish army as sanitary instructor II.1932-II.1934.
Mobilised by Sedovaya Vishnya (Sądowa Wisznia?) RVK of Drohobych Oblast on 18.2.1945
93rd reserve rifle regiment - sanitary instructor II.1945-III.1945
194th Army Reserve Rifle Regiment - rifleman III.1945-V.1945
503rd Rifle Regiment - rifleman V.1945-VI.1945
Unit number 97696 - rifleman VI.1945-10.1945.
Demobilised on 17.8.1945.

Re: Ministry Of The Armed Forces Military Soldiers' Booklets.

Information on service in the GPW - from 18th march 1945 till 9th may 1945 in the 194th Army Reserve Regiment as riflemana and in the 503 rifle regiment. Also, a much later photograph was in the booklet.

Had no wounds, was awarded VoG.

Here is the less so frequently seen Naval Booklet. This was issued to 1905 born Kievan Ivan Andreevich Strikun. A senior motorist and auto-mechanic. Originally called in September 1927 to serve in the 6th Naval Artillery Brigade, reaching the position of Starshina-Motorist. Placed in the first reserve, he was awarded both the military and labour victory Medals in 1945.

Re: Ministry Of The Armed Forces Military Soldiers' Booklets.

It records his education - for which this pass remains. A very well preserved identification for the Kiev Auto-Road Training Complex. The identification itself is conflicted as it doesn't know if the Training Complex is under "Tsudortrans" (Central Management Of Highways And Dirt Roads And Automobile Transport) under the Soviet Of People's Commissars of the USSR or "Glavdorupr" (Main Management For The Construction And Operation Of Roads Of The Republican And Local Significance) under the Soviet Of People's Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR.

A great piece from 85 years ago, that also shows how quickly he aged.
