Stalingrad "Glaz" Hill
Does anyone know the location of "Glaz" Hill near Stalingrad?
The recipient was at this location, in the 233 Rifle Division on 20 September 1942. I've been able to find the division on maps for SEP and the unit's location was north/northwest of the city. |

Re: Stalingrad "Glaz" Hill
Hi Paul,
here is your Division (233cd) on January 43. It is 10 km away from Stalingrad (green arrow upper left corner). Paul, can you post a map (city) of the location of the unit in September 1942, that would be helpful were to search. regards Andreas Last edited by Alfred; 01-03-2009 at 03:18 PM. |

Re: Stalingrad "Glaz" Hill
The map shows the division about 40 to 50km from the city. The division was released from STAVKA reserves in Aug/Sept 42. Depending on who you read it was subordinate to either 65th Army, or 24th Army (aka 1st Reserve Army), or 8th Reserve Army, at the time; there was a lot of juggling units in the first period of the campaign. By February 43 many units were away from where they'd been in Sept 42.

KUMANEN--?
I'm looking for the location of a town or city in East Prussia transliterated "Kumanen" from Russian into English. It could be Cumanen, Kuemanen, etc. however on 3.2.45 the 91 Guards Rifle Division (39 Army) was there.
I realize many of the towns in former East Prussia, Kaliningrad Oblast, etc. changed names. Any idea? Thanks in advance. |

Re: KUMANEN--?
Any idea where, roughly, on the map it is/was?

Re: KUMANEN--?
Based on the historic trail of the 39 Army and the time period, north or northeast of Koenigsberg (now called Kaliningrad).

Re: KUMANEN--?
Maybe this?
Kulmerland (Culmerland, Culm land, Polish: ziemia chełmińska, German: Kulmerland (help·info)) is a German name of a historical region in central Poland bounded by the Vistula and Drwęca rivers. Kulmerland is named after the city of Chełmno (also known as Culm). The largest cities in the region are Toruń, Grudziądz, Chełmno, and Chełmża. Sometimes it was considered to be part of the neighbouring provinces of Masovia, Kuyavia, Greater Poland, Prussia, and Pomerania; it is currently part of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodship. The Culmerland or Kulmer Land was in Latin named Culmigeria (Holmrugier), referring to the ancient people of the Baltic Sea. Culmigerier was one of the names of the Prussians in general. It is located on the right bank of the Vistula river, from the mouth of the Drwęca river to Chełmno. Where the Vistula river takes a sharp turn northward, the Drwęca forms the eastern border of the region, while its southern and western border is the Vistula river. |

Here's a zoomable old map of East Prussia: : Baltic States & East Prussia. The Edinburgh Geographical Institute, John Bartholomew & Son, Ltd. "The Times" atlas. (London: The Times, 1922) if that link don't work click the map on this: Baltic States & East Prussia. / Bartholomew, J. G. (John George), 1860-1920 ; John Bartholomew and Son / 1922
I've searched for a few minutes and found nothing similar. Any idea how far from Koenigsberg this might be? Lithuanian German Russian Kumėnai Kumehnen Kumačiovo ? from: Place Names in Lithuania Minor

Re: KUMANEN--?
Gentlemen, thank you much for your assistance:thumbsup. I believe the most likely candidate is present Kumenai, Lithuania based on Eric's provided website with the German/Lithuanian spellings.

[QUOTE=desantnik;107910]
I realize many of the towns in former East Prussia, Kaliningrad Oblast, etc. changed names. QUOTE] Hi Paul, most of the towns in former East Prussia changed their names not only once but twice. After the Nazis got to goverment, in 1933 to 1939 a lot of towns in east Prussia changed their names because the names sound to the Nazi Party not german enough. In 1945 the names were changed by the soviets and polish a second time. I recognize that in some citations the soviet used the old german names of towns before 1933 and that this towns were renamed in the period 1933 to 1939. Maybe the reason is that the soviet used old maps. regards Andreas |
