Re: Broken Ring/connection...fixable?

This is a two men job. One will deposit a small drop of glue on the medal via the toothpick, while the other will then press them together for 10/30 second as hard as he can. That is it..! Since the metal cracked if done carefully you will be able to "re-match" the 2 parts together.

As far as the glue, any Cyanoacrylate will be fine!

Brendan,
That didn't look as bad as I had imagined but yes, it is still noticable.

Re: Broken Ring/connection...fixable?

Well Jeff, you could find some nice black earth (preferabley Soviet issue), add a little water and make some mud. Rub it on, let it dry and then clean most of it off.
I've actually aged ribbons that way. I also age my ribbons by rubbing them between two bricks with some sand thrown in but I don't think that would be a good idea with your BM.
Fakers use some sort of chemical to give silver a patina. I have no idea what it is though.
If you smoke how about rubbing some cigarette ash on it? I've done that as well to ribbons.

Re: Broken Ring/connection...fixable?

I fear giving my BM cancer, so I won't do the last one. However, I might give the first idea a try.

Cleaning medals

What usually the people used to clean the medals?
I have some dark, I wonder if are any problem in clean with a product to clean metal and silver.
I don't know if the product takes the gold colour of them

Best regards, Luis

Re: Cleaning medals

Hi:
I clean every medal with the specific product for each material: brass, copper, silver, etc..
Clean soil at depth, but care should be taken with the gold to be treated more gently

Re: Cleaning medals

... Luis indeed, not all the world like cleaning the coin, many people want to keep the patina that time and history added

Re: Cleaning medals

I would say, that the answer is simply "Don´t", awards has a patina which is better kept. If the recipient of the award chose to clean it, then so be it, but as collectors I dont think we should apply any chemicals.

Re: Cleaning medals

I prefer soap and water for obvious surface dirt. Nothing more than polishing with a soft cloth and no harsh chemicals.
There are a few threads about cleaning here:
