People's Artist Of The U.S.S.R.

Do anyone collect those title? How many exist? How many of each type? is there a GRAMOTA with it?

Here is the title "National artist of the USSR": (note the MMD symbol and NO S/N):

This is not from my collection. The seller asked $345 for it.

Additional information from a distinguished member of the forum :

"National artist of the USSR" Was established in 1936. It was given in various areas: theatre, movie, music. At least couple of thousand awarded. Price range: - $250-300.

Tal,

I've never seen one of these for sale, but managed to find it in the Herefurth catalogue. It looks quite nice.

Here is what the Herefurth catalogue says about it (anyone care the translate the German?):

Does anyone know what level of award is this considered to be, a title, order, medal or badge? Are there any references to these in any reference books?

Does anyone actually have any of these?

Kind regards,
Shane Cook.

Shane,

You can read all about this one in the official regulations, the Sbornik book. In my 1987 edition, this award is illustrated and explained on page 190. This is the burgundy book all in Russian published by Izvestia.

Well, I have three of these now:

Peoples Artist Performer of the USSR.
Peoples Artist of the USSR.
Peoples Architect of the USSR.

They are really quite nice little medals. Can anyone tell me any more about these? I was told the following:

"Regarding the People's Artist title and medal, only a few titles were bestowed each year between 1943 and the late 80s. The medals appeared only in 1985. At that point they were probably back issued to all surviving title holders (much like the Hero Stars back in 1939). No exact numbers are mentioned in any literature, but there are reasons to believe the number of medals issued was in the hundreds, not thousands.

Peoples Performance Artist Title was introduced in 1936, medal appeared likewise in 1985. Title of Peoples Architect had shorter life span, from 1967 through the late 80s - the medal first appeared in 1985 as well. Regarding the documents, each of the medals was accompanied by a small and large certificate, very much like a Hero Star."

I don't suppose anyone has ever seen one of these documents?

Kind Regards,
Shane Cook.

Mystery of a People's Artist Ivanov unleashed!

Colleagues,

I just finished reading Henry Sakaida's article on People's Artist and Actor/Film Producer Ivanov. Henry acquired his awards - including pre-war Lenin couple of years ago.

Several unsuccessful attempts were made by both Henry and previous owner to research the group, which let to conflicting conclusions.

Finally Henry was able to trace the history of the group and his report is avaiable for our reading here:

http://www.soviet-awards.com/digest/ivanov/ivanov.htm

What strikes me the most - all sorts of sophisticated approaches were deployed, including inquiries to the archives and to Russian as well as to the US foreigh offices, but the key to the group's past was simple typing of a name in the Russian web search engine...

William

Wow! Thanks for posting the link!

That was a great read... My only regret was selling the group. :D

But since I did, I don't think that it could have found a better home than with Henry... What an amazing job he did at making them talk!!!

Dave,
This is a great story and a fun read, indeed! Of course, trying yandex and their bibliography search is something one should never underlook (and save time, money, dish washing hassle, like Henry's "deal", etc.) Here is the link, if someone doesn't have it (it's not commercial, and just proved to be very valuable, so I think it's ok to post it):
http://encycl.yandex.ru/yandsearch?e...pt=encyc&text=

I thought I just saw this group on sale again only a couple of months ago (on eBay, of course). The Lenin has a distinctive screwback place, with engraved Ivanov's name... Does Henry still have it?

Now, on a not very related matter, I have a question to Henry - were you ever a horse racer (jockey)? Perhaps, somebody else might know this...?

Cheers,

Alex.

I agree with Alex 100%!

The importance of Yandex and other Russian searches can't be overestimated.

Once it saved me from overpaying for the group that seller claimed was to a director of major defence shipbuilding factory in the USSR.

The seller was asking large premium just for the fact that the recepient was big shot in the USSR.

A friend on mine advised me to look for the info on the Russian search sites. His logic was - "If the person was as prominent as the seller claims - there should be something on the web about the awardee!"

After I found no mentioning of the name on the web - the sale fell through...

So, before passing on or shelling out big bucks for the group/research - check Yandex!

Best regards,
William

Re: National XXXXX of the USSR

They are rare, very rare. For example National artist of the USSR was given only around 1000 times. In soviet estonia only 16 persons got this honor.

This set includes large gramota, looking similar to mother heroine gramota and also it has a similar large blue box.
