Belorussia 1944

A study of the Red Army's Belorussian operation in the summer of 1944, unprecedented in terms of its scale, scope and strategic consequences. The Soviet Stavka had planned a campaign consisting of a series of massive operations spanning the entire Soviet-German front. Four powerful fronts (army groups) operated under close Stavka (high command) control. Over 1.8 million troops acomplished a feat unique in the history of the Red Army: the defeat and dismemberment of an entire German army group. This book is a translation of the Soviet General Staff Study No 18, a work originally classified as "secret" and intended to educate Soviet commanders and staff officers. The operation is presented from the Soviet perspective, in the words of the individuals who planned and orchestrated the plans. A map supplement, including terrain maps, is provided to illustrate the flow of the operation in greater detail.

TABLE OF CONTENTS:
Situation in Belorussia at beginning of June 1944 - plan of the Red Army's Belorussian operation

I know David Glantz from academic conferences as well as his outstanding books and studies. When Glantz first started writing and having an impact on U.S. army command and staff education, the memoires of Wehrmacht generals and studies of the various German campaigns, particularly in the Soviet Union were the bibles. The attitude was that somehow the Soviet cheated by coming up with "hordes" of men that they threw senselessly against the poor outnumbered Nazis. And that Hitler's intereferece is what lost the fine German generals the war. David and his colleagues' careful analysis of the Soviet art of war did a lot to turn that attitude around. When the "red" forces at Ft. Irwin began using Soviet tactics, faithfully, against the "blue" forces and almost always winning, it is not an going too far to say that David and his colleagues had a lot to do with that. I think it is also fair to say that, especially in the first Gulf war, that training paid off against an Iraqi army whose generals had studied at the Frunze Academy. They were beaten at their own game learned at the National Training Center.

New Glantz Books for the Library

I picked up the two latest Glantz books for Christmas and am just about to finish the second volume of the Stalingrad trilogy:
  • To the Gates of Stalingrad: Soviet-German Combat Operations, April-August 1942
  • Armageddon in Stalingrad: September-November 1942

Like other Glantz books these are very information rich and are based on newly released material which was previously hidden in the archives. The books contain lots of maps (though some are hard to read) and many orders of battle, both on the flanks of Stalingrad and inside the city itself. Once you get to the battles in the city details of casualties and location are provided down to the regimental level and often to battalion level as well.

I suspect that people with researched Stalingrad awards may be able to work out which streets or building in the Red October, Barrikady or Lazur sites they we won based on the information provided in particularly the second volume.

This series must be the definitive set of books on Stalingrad, at least from the Russian viewpoint. A definite purchase for Stalingrad nuts - yes I was thinking of you Norm :D

Hopefully the final volume will be released soon.
