Re: Silk flag with Lenin and republic crests
The front of the banner says something like "Challenge banner for high indices in socialist COMPETITION".
I guess this could mean it would be given to some successful factory, plant, etc. The back has "GLORY to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" Simon |

Re: Silk flag with Lenin and republic crests
Thanks for the info! I really like this flag, especially the fine embroidery on the crests.

Re: Silk flag with Lenin and republic crests
It's a beautiful flag and it deserves to be shown. Trouble is both sides are really nice, and a flag like this is so heavy (if I'm thinking of the same style) that the weight of it, if displayed incorrectly, will degrade it. Not to mention sunlight and humidity.
Any idea how old it is? Can the number of crests date it? Good question. Anybody got flag preservation tips? Framed between two sheets of plexiglass perhaps?

Re: Silk flag with Lenin and republic crests
I'd say looking at the design and condition that it's from the 70s.
It is a very nice flag! And because it's two-sided, it'd be nice to put it on the wall in a way that you can easily flip it around to display the other side. |

Re: Silk flag with Lenin and republic crests
You could place the flag between two sheets of museum grade perspex (I think it is that or some sort of acrylic) which is UV blocking. The local picture-framers around here offer it as an extra. If the sheets were bigger than the flag you could incorporate fittings to hang it. Then you could flip the whole thing now and again to display either side.
I was thinking of doing something similar for a two-sided poster. Simon |

Re: Silk flag with Lenin and republic crests
I resolved the same problem - at least how to hang it - with a two-sided silk flag I have from the GPW (or immediately afterwards, I have been told). You can put three or more screw-in hooks in the wall leaving about an inch of space so the flag doesn't actually touch the wall. Then you buy the rings with clips on them (pictured) and hang it on the hooks. You can then easily turn it around. I switch it about once a month just for variety since it hangs right above the desk where I'm typing this.
I normally don't open the blinds in this room so I'm not worried about UV fading. But if you sandwhiched between the material Simon mentioned, you could drill holes through the plastic and do more or less the same thing I did. Hope this helps, Phillip

Re: Silk flag with Lenin and republic crests
Nice flag!! Nice display as well. And, in a pinch a nifty emergency shower curtain! ;)

Re: Silk flag with Lenin and republic crests
Now the more interesting side and a small framed propaganda poster with a similar message from May Day, 1946 (actually it says it was made on April 23 and is No. 2114, "type 2" of 10,000). Anyway, if you see a reflection, its me taking the picture. It was either that or the one with the flash in the glass (or both).;)

Re: Silk flag with Lenin and republic crests
Phillip,
Now that you mention it, there is something that I don't quite understand. Your flag shows the Soviet crest with 16 ribbons (used 1946 to 1956), yet it is dedicated to the XXVIIth Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, which took place in 1986  Marc |
