Re: Order of Lenin to Anatoliy Vassilievich Anuchin

Because he doesn't wear a military uniform on his picture, I thought he might be a pig or cotton farmer who got rewarded for higher than planned production. But yesterday, I found in the Pravda newspaper edition of March 23, 1965, an article that, despite not mentioning him by name, seems to indicate he would have been rewarded for his contribution to the building and electrification of the railway between Moscow and Sverdlovsk (now Ekaterinburg).

Three people were awarded with the title of Hero of Socialist Labor for that project, while 407 workers, engineers and other employees were rewarded with Order of Lenin (10), Order of the Red Banner of Labor (34), Badge of Honor (105), Medal for Valiant Labor (122) and medal for Distinguished Labor (136).

Not sure yet, but seems he's one of the 10 who got a Lenin in this batch.

Now, I am wondering how could we get more details about this decree? Can we find the full decree online somewhere?

Re: Lenin,342461,Electrification Of The Railway

Indeed, Anuchin was awarded his Order of Lenin for the Electrification of Moscow-Sverdlovsk Railway. He was a foreman (brigadier) in Electric "Train 2" company, part of the "Elektromontazh" trust.

And here is some additional information putting the award in context:

The Trans-Siberian Railway
The Trans-Siberian Railway is a network of railways connecting Moscow with the Far East and the Sea of Japan. It is the longest railway in the world and runs for 9288 kilometres from Moscow to Vladivostok. Its full-time construction began in March 1891 from the two ends simultaneously and was completed in September 1904.

In 1929, the project of electrifying the Trans-Siberian Railway began from Moscow going East and was done in 66 segments varying from 10 to more than 400 kilometres until its full length electrification on December 25, 2002 at Ruzhino station. Because the electrification project spans over more than 70 years, it used various technologies and a mix of direct and alternating current and voltages. So, despite it being the longest railway in the world with persistent electrification, in theory, it is only possible to travel up to 5576 kilometres on a single electric locomotive (alternating current) between Mariinsk in West Siberia to Vladivostok. However, with the more modern electric locomotives combining both AC and DC, it would be possible to go from one end to the other without changing locomotive. The electrification allowed a doubling of train weights to 6,000 tonnes.

During World War II, to prevent the invading Germans from taking advantage of the electric railway and move further into the East, reaching the retreated industries, Soviet authorities dismantled the Moscow-Alexandrov section of the railway during 1941-42.

"Electric Installation Trains" and Trust "Transelektromontazh"
Entire routes were electrified between 1946 and 1955, but this was not progressing fast enough for Soviet authorities. To increase the pace of railway electrification, the resolution № 3890 of the Council of Ministers of August 27, 1952 allowed the Ministry of Railways to create the All-Union Assembly Trust for railway electrification. In pursuance with this decision and the decision № 21-3386 of the State Commission for the regular Council of Ministers on November 15, 1952, the All-Union Assembly Trust for railway electrification "Transelektromontazh" was created on 6 January 1953 by order № 7/TsZ of the Railway Ministry,

The Trust was established as an independent self-financing organization, run by the General Directorate of Railways Electrification and has in its composition self-supporting portable electric train assembly contact system and traction substations, material supply base and industry for metal processing and assembly details contact system and traction substations.

Order № 2671-D of the Ministry of Railways of January 15, allowed the trust to create five "branches" or traveling trains performing electrical installation of catenary and traction substations:
• "Electrical installation" train number № 701 in January 1953. Station Moscow Moscow-Kiev railway, based on the wiring firm control "Moselektrotyagstroy";
• "Electrical installation" № 702 in January 1953. Station Barabinsk Omsk Railway, based on mounting offices electrification of the road;
• "Electrical installation" № 703 in January 1953. Station Samtredia Transcaucasian Railway;
• "Electrical installation"№ 704 Berdyaush South Ural Railway in April 1953;
• "Electrical installation"№ 705 Omsk Omsk Railway in July 1953.

In 1954, the Trust was transferred to the newly created Ministry of Transport Construction. At its peak, during the late 1950s-early 1960s, the Trust operated nine trains.

Between 1958 and 1965, the country’s electrified track grew from a total of 9,500 km to a total of 24,900 km. Major railroad routes—such as the Moscow-Irkutsk line, which is more than 5,000 km long, and the Moscow-Gorky-Sverdlovsk line, which is approximately 1,8000 km long—were converted to electric traction, as were suburban lines of large cities and industrial centers.

From 1953 to 1992, the Trust installed 137,618 km of catenaries and 1610 traction substations.

Following the breakup of Soviet Union, Trust "Transelektromontazh" was privatized and registered as a public company, Open Joint Stock Company "Transelektromontazh". In the post-Soviet years of 1993-2010, the Trust installed or upgraded another 17,348 km of catenaries. The company, headquartered in Moscow, has seven branches spreading across Russia from the Caucasus in the East to the city of Amur in Far East, focusing on the construction, reconstruction and overhaul of electrification and power supply on all directions of the entire Trans-Siberian railways. To each of those seven branch, correspond a "electrical installation" train.

Elektromontazh has kept the pace with industrial and business standards and has obtained various certifications including ISO 9001 for quality assurance, ISO 14001 for environmental management, and GOST 12.0.230 for industrial health and safety.

Electrification of Moscow-Sverlovsk Railway
During the early 1960s, the electrification of the Trans-Siberian progressed rapidly with the electrification of a 998-kilometre stretch between Svecha and Yekaterinburg. Therefore, on September 30, 1964, with the electrification of the last station, Balezino, the electrification of the railway line Moscow - Sverdlovsk was completed on its entire length of approximately 1800 kilometres. It linked Moscow, Gorky [Nizhny Novgorod] , Kirov, Perm, and Sverdlovsk [Yekaterinburg] without interruption. According to the Pravda issue of October 1, 1964, the project involved the installation of 85,000 poles, 5,700 kilometres of overhead catenary lines, the construction of 55 electric traction stations and a number of regional substations, and the installation of more than 3 thousand kilometres of transmission lines of 110,000 and 220,000 volts.

The electrification of Moscow - Sverdlovsk railway was implemented at a high technical level. For more than 1000 kilometres, it used the new standard of electric traction using alternate current (AC 25Kv). Also, it implemented new technology of fully compensated catenary, with both the supporting and conductor wires tensed together, allowing trains to travel at high speed of more than 160 kilometers per hour.

Many workers on the electrification of the Moscow-Sverdlovsk railway line were awarded with state awards. The March 22, 1965 decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of USSR [Decree 156 / № 3371-VI] conferred the title of Hero of Socialist Labor to three of the most distinguished builders and installers - participants to the electrification of Moscow-Sverdlovsk Railway - awarding them with the Gold Star medal "Hammer and Sickle" and the Order of Lenin. On the same day, another decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of USSR [Decree 157 / № 3372-VI] rewarded, with orders and medals of the USSR, a total of 407 workers, engineers, and other employees who distinguished the most during this project: 10 were awarded with the Order of Lenin, 34 with the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, 105 with the Order of the Badge of Honor, 122 with the Medal for Valiant Labor and 136 with the Medal for Distinguished Labor.

Among those honoured workers, was Anatoliy Vassilievich Anuchin, foreman [brigadier] of electric-wiring train № 702, Trust "Transelektromontazh", whose achievements were rewarded with an Order of Lenin.
