Rusty,
It's just the unusual color patina. They don't fake this variation, the gold is too expensive. Alexei |

look like perfectly genuine...If you're a bit paranoid, weight them and check the gold, it must be 14k (583/1000): it must resist to acid for 10-12k and disapear for acid at 18k (I have the jeweler acid kit).

Majorpayne,
They don't fake these variations yet, but I have seen one piece with gold "sunburst" replaced with brass replica. As Charlet said, yours are perfectly genuine. Alexei |

Order of the Patriotic War, 1985 issue
I've got two informations regarding the material used for the 1985 issue. One source talks about silver-plated metal and the other of real silver (sterling). Are these really made from real silver/gold-plated silver (1st class)? Thanks for any replies!

Silver
The Pat War 1st Class 85 issue is. Quote. The order is made of silver with large portions Gold-Plated. Unquote.
Paul McD's book on soviet medals. A real bargain if you consider the material. I got one with book for about 8 dollars. Pat 2 the same but not gold plated. Chris |

Patriotic War 2nd class
I have bought this document some time ago, but it still makes me curious.
I thought that order of Patriotic War was given onlyshortly after the War, but here's the translation of the text from this documents (mistakes are possible): "For Courage (...) shown in fight with German-fascist enemies(?) and to notice 40th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 years (...)" So, was the Patriotic War given in 1985? Wasn't there any special 40th anniversary medal? And the second question about the same documents: there is a number printed (335644) and it is not order number, because this one is written and is 3094381. Any idea what the first number is. And btw: the order was given to certain Ivan Andrieievich Lieshchuk. |

You really need either a good book or a long search on this forum to give you the full story. But briefly, there are really two Orders of the Patriotic War. The one introduced in the 1942 and issued during and shortly after the war. In exceptional cases, people whose claims had got lost or whatever, it did continue to be issued long after the war.
Then there is the 1985 version. Unlike the 40th anniversary medal issued to all veterans and current servicemen the 1985 Order of the Patriotic War was issued only to some veterans, those that had receieved certian awards during the war - I don't have my references handy to tell you more. The other number is likely the document number and should have a letter in front of it. Shawn |
