A general question to all. To your experience and observation, which awards are researchable?
Military awards a) military awards during and after WWII awarded are researchable if the papers/documents are available and still not classified as secret - land and air forces , navy and sometimes NKWD/MGB/KGB b) Are awards from the Spanish civil war researchable? I know a person who got research by serial number for an Order of Lenin screwback from Spanish civil war for an NKVD person. c) Are there any selfmade lists from researcher/collectors available with serial number of military awards before WWII (Red Star, Lenin …) and the name of the recipient ? Made out of observation from documents split from the award and so on. Civil Awards Which civil awards are researchable? d) Hero Star (there is a little book printed with most of the names and serial numbers) e) Hero Labour Stars if you have the name of the recipant from the awards documents ? Maybe there are newspaper articles or old UKAZ lists with name and profession of the recipient? I saw a group with Red Star and bravery medal with a lot of civil awards, a few Red Banner of Labour and a Order of Friendship award, Badge of Honour for sale on a Russian forum with award card. On this award card the civil awards were entered next to the military awards. f) Are there any selfmade lists from researcher/collectors available with serial number of the old Labour awards before WWII (Red Banner of Labour, Badge of Honour…) and the name of the recipient? That these awards may can researched by newspaper articles or old UKAZ. (see picture) g) Are there any other civil awards researchable if you have the name? Prawda Archive online The Prawda is on online available, what means that for research potential of soviet awards (military awards, labour awards)? 97 Years of History Now Online Pravda Digital Microfilm Exclusively from East View The most widely read and referenced news source from the Soviet era is now available online in full-text and full-image back to its inception in 1912 up to the end of 2009. East View has converted Pravda microfilm to an online digital resource. Researchers will be able to search through the chief chronicle of Russian and Soviet history, from the beginnings of the Russian Revolution through World War II, the Cold War, the fall of the Soviet Union, and everything in between best regards and thanks Andreas Last edited by CtahhR; 12-31-2012 at 05:13 PM. |

Re: Which awards are researchable? A general question?
Much depends on your definition of "research". Record card and award sheet from TsAMO are only available for serial numbered military orders and medals from the start of the GPW to the collapse of the USSR. Prewar awards don't have award sheets in TsAMO, but if the recipient later received other serial numbered military awards, there should at least be a record card and the award sheets for his other awards. As far as I know, nobody has ever seen an award sheet from before the GPW, so if the Spanish Civil War Lenin has an award sheet, I would really like to see it.
Since TsAMO is a military archive, there are no award sheets for civilian awards or record cards to civilians there. It has always been possible to check old Pravda issues for early civilian awards, but this is of course an entirely different, less extensive kind of research. There also exists a Russian publication with all (award) decrees, so if you know the decree date for for example a Friendship of Peoples, you might be able to find out who received it and (very basically) for what. Finally, I have Russian documents that list practically all pre-war awards (award + name + very basically what it was awarded for), so if you have the name of the recipient you can "research" it with that list. The semi-civilian record card is very interesting, I wonder where this comes from. Last edited by CtahhR; 12-19-2012 at 04:45 AM. |

I am confident that this card comes from Podolsk. When a person received a mix of civilian and military awards, they were all entered on his/her UK. The problem lies in researching purely civilian awards, in other terms, when a person did not receive any military award. Marc |

I had never observed this mix civilian/military awards on a record card until Andreas' post. I've always been interested in these mixed groups as perhaps the closest thing to civilian award research, and I have two in my collection (posted below). Neither has the civilian awards on the record card. With the exception of a rare, early OBH (which does not really count, I think), I have not seen it in groups posted by fellow forum members either. I would be fascinated to see more examples of these award cards if you have them. Thanks :thumbsup Alex Below: group of an OGPW2 (no citation because it was a navy award), Valiant Labor medal, and ORBL Last edited by RedMaestro2; 08-09-2010 at 11:49 AM. |

A second group: catch-up OGIII and ORBL. From the record card I know the recipient was a demolition worker. He probably got the ORBL from that, but it does not appear on the card.

This is the guy by the way:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_Green_(politician) It´s a lovely group with 5 Red Banner of Labour to one person, but the price is like a rocket in the sky. -------------------------------------------------------------- Now the discussion starts to get interesting: There also exists a Russian publication with all (award) decrees, so if you know the decree date for for example a Friendship of Peoples, you might be able to find out who received it and (very basically) for what. The Faleristika has several FoPs researched this way (search for example on György or Писецкого). Finally, I have Russian documents that list practically all pre-war awards (award + name + very basically what it was awarded for), so if you have the name of the recipient you can "research" it with that list. Where are these documents available? I have a pdf book from 1926 with Red Banner Awards and awards of the Revolution from 1920 to 1926. The name, the military unit of the person and year is listened. -------------------------------------------------------------------- My friend has a complete list of mirror-reversed Red Banners and about 90% complete list of early Red Stars (before 10.000). Some other people have lists of BH and RBL.But it was common that for pre-war awards no citations were filled. Above is what I have read. Where are these list with names and serial numbers of the award? Here are some examples what I have, but this is only a drop in the bucket. best regards Andreas Last edited by CtahhR; 12-31-2012 at 05:15 PM. |

Re: Which awards are researchable? A general question?
The decree book is called "Ведомости Верховного Совета СССР", which was an official state publication that was issued every year. I've never seen one for sale though. Here is some more info (in Russian):
Regarding the lists of prewar awardings, I encountered these on a Russian Forum. I will e-mail you. Regarding the other lists: I believe it was Andrei Kuznetsov that posted that. I you want to know more about those lists I think it is best to contact him. |

The paper "Ведомости Верховного Совета СССР" can be found in the link below for the years 1938-53. I don't know how complete it is, but I believe it to be pretty complete.
