Art,Tal,
Does it state in the books the reason for awarding?
40 HSU awardees from foreign countries! That,s quite a few Stars one should imagine that they are all on record.

Eddie,

Unfortunately, no information other than name of recipient, award #, and date is given.

The data is organized sequentially according to award #. Obviously the later the date of awarding the further towards the back of the book the entry is located. If I had a date for Mohmand's awarding I could find it rather easily. Seeing as Castro's was in there I see no reason why the others wouldn't be as well.

Art,
The date of the article in the newspaper where I found this HSU was 08 September 1988, maybe that helps to narrow the search down.

Lieutenant General Pham Tuan HSU

North Vietnams HSU

On 23 July, 1980 one-time water buffalo herder Lieutenant General Pham Tuan was blasted into space on board a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft.
Hailed as the Third World's first cosmonaut, Lieutenant Tuan was instantly elevated to the status of national hero.
Back on Earth Lieutenant Tuan was lauded with party and state honours, including one of the highest accolades of the Eastern Bloc, Hero of the Soviet Union.

During the United States' Chistmas 1972 bombing campaign over North Vietnam, Lieutenant Tuan was the first Vietnamese fighter pilot to shoot down a giant B-52 bomber.

Eddie,

Found him in the OK book. He was awarded HSU star #11584 on Sept. 7, 1988.

Ed,

No luck with this guy. I checked from 1982 up to 1991. There are alot of unissued HSU stars, perhaps he wasn't recorded? seems rather odd given that I was able to find the others..I'll try to lookup all these names in the HSU books this weekend.

Also on the crew were two Soviets:

Colonel Yury Vasilyevich Malyshev, Soviet Air Force and cosmonaut
Engineer Gennady Mikhailovich Strekalov, Soviet cosmonaut

All three were, presumably awarded HSU at about the same time. Also awarded the Ashoka Chakra by India, the highest civilian gallantry medal (~= George Cross -- these 3 AC awards were and are immensely controversial).

If possible, can the number of Sharma's HSU star be determined (Art?)?

I hope to be able to examine and photograph his group this summer. He retired as a Wing Commander.

Art,

Thanks for the efforts. This is interesting indeed. I know he was awarded the HSU, it was both standard practice for "foreign friend" cosmonaut/passengers and a friend who served with him has seen the medals. I know that at the time both his award of HSU and the reciprocal AC awards were immensely controversial in India. The flight was fine, the gongs were not. As the wise old lady said: "Curiouser and curiouser."

Were you able to find Malyshev and Strekalov?

Now I really DO need to lay eyes, hands, and camera on his group.

Thanks again,

Ed

Art,
Thanks for the research, there seems to be a lot of Foriegn Cosmonauts who were awarded the HSU.

Ed,
I wonder why there is no record of Squadron Leader Rakesh Sharmas HSU. If you can examine and photograph his group later in the year please post the pics.
I,m thinking about following up on Abdul Ahad Mohmands HSU. Apparently he is now an Afgan Refugee living over here in Stuttgart. If I get the chance I,ll get some pics of his group. That is if he was able to bring them with him.

Eddie.

Ed: I have aso looked threw the Hero book but have not seen the names: Malyshev, Strekalov or Rakesh Sharma. The only thing I have is the date that Rakesh Sharma got his HSU title: 11 april 1984.

The number is not in the book as I wrote, BUT there are two possible gaps. As the autors say: blank rows are issued stars but with "unkown" recipiants. Because it's (almost) cronological I think the numbers could be in the groups of three blank rows. The dates are:

23.1.84
blank
blank
blank

17.2.84
17.2.84
17.2.84
17.2.84
blank
blank
13.4.84
blank
blank
blank

7.5.85

So a wild(?) guess would be that the 11 april cosmonauts got stars numbered in the "second blank group", wich gives numbers 11 513 - 11 515. Closer than that takes real knowledges ;) Did this make any sense...

Also note that 43 foreigners got stars. I know only 15 of the serial numbers so if you got more please help.

Eddie: if you find Abdul Ahad Mohmand you will find the last foreigner who got a HSU star. Let us know if you do.

/Kim
