Yuri Vasilievich Malyshev & Rakesh Sharma

Ed,
I,ve not found any evidence yet that Yuri Vasilievich Malyshev or Rakesh Sharma were HSU,s
There are no records of Awards in various short Biographys that I have read of both Cosmonauts.
Sqn Ldr Rakesh Sharma was awarded the Ashoka Chakra, for the sucessful completion of the Space Mission. As were his Russian companions Malyshev and Strekalov. This is the first and the only time, the Ashoka Chakra was awarded to foreigners.
Strange.

Ed and Eddie :)

My results were obviously the same as Kims for the OK books regarding these cosmonauts. I did find Strekalov and Malyshev in the Hero books though..if anyone is interested I'll scan their bio's. No record of Sharma though in the Hero books.

It seems to me that I once heard that Nasser was honore with the Gold Star medal of a Hero of the Soviet Union, during the years of the Soviet flirtation with Egypt. Can anyone confirm this?

1964: Nasser and Khrushchev divert the Nile:

President Gamal Abdul Nasser of Egypt and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev have marked the first stage in the building of the Aswan High Dam.
Mr Khrushchev announced President Nasser would receive Russia's highest honour - Hero of the Soviet Union.
Did he ever recive his HSU?

I remember that there are also some more french HSUs already shown in this forum. One or two of them were WWII war pilots.

Escadrille "Normandie-Niemen"

Esteban,

They are/were the Pilots of the Free French Escadrille "Normandie-Niemen".

Awards were given to 83 Frenchmen;

Four of them became Heroes of the Soviet Union.

De Gaulle gave the regiment the first part of its name, Normandie, in English Normandy. The second, Niemen, was added by Stalin after the Frenchmen fought in the battle to retake the Neman River in August 1944.

The pilots of Normandie-Niemen made 5,240 sorties, took part in 869 battles, gunned down 273 enemy planes and damaged 80 more planes, their itinerary stretching from Moscow to Elbing, East Prussia. They helped liberate Oryol, Bryansk, Smolensk, Belarus and Lithuania.
Overall, 45 out of the regiment's 97 pilots who fought in the Soviet force either died or went missing.
They were trained to fly Yakovlev planes, beginning with the Yak-1B and finishing the war with the Yak-3, what was then a modern light fighter. At the end of the war, they were given 40 of these planes to fly home. Of the first group of pilots, only three are alive today.

fidel's badge (late)

I think the badge Fidel's wearing is cuban badge, as the thing in the center is the same color as the frame, while red star on soviet badge should be as dark as the part of the flag on the top of thew badge. After all, I don't think it was possible to became a member of soviet guards without serving in RKKA/SA.
