Thanks for the answer Patrik,

Welcome to the forum Eric :)

With regards to markings on the back I'm not sure, it was an internet image.

For the viewing pleasure, this is an early Estonia NSV "Ulemnoukogo" badge from 1947, which I sold in 2002 and got stunning 150 USD. Wonder what that one would bring today.

ENSV Ulemnoukogu

I have been looking for one of these for years, I have seen several that look good, but I am paranoid of fakes, so I have avoided them all. One sold for 4000 USD at the February auction in New York, and the listed estimate was only 400 USD.

Keith;

Worry about Conv 1 - which was silver. I was offered one and did not know that then and said I had some of that "design"! Argh! Second and Third, bronze.gilt. Try to get with document and that is safer. But you know how to reach me and we can compare any offers to my documented Esti II and III.

Re Tretov - really cool. Between us we may have cornered the market here. How many more can there be? Estii was first to put Convocation on their badges with the 2nd (II). Other republics would take until 8 or 9 to catch on.

4000 USD! I am crying blood... :( Now, I have indeed seen this type of badge in Estonia even recently, but

a) I assume they are fakes, and
b) they are, fake or not, always very expensive.

Re: Deputy Internet auctions this weekend

I looked back through the string here and Tretov's post of his badge II from 2002 matches the two distinctions I noted (told only one). THe gap is wider on his badge and the half moon above the "O" is quite well formed, same with this auction (but not on mine or Mekhonoshin). My badge II is by metallmark and this auction badge is by juveelitehas. Was yours by Juveelitehas? (If you remember the screwplate)

Re: Deputy Internet auctions this weekend

The screwplate on mine was not Juveelitehas, the plate was probably a replacement. The other two ENSV Ulemnoukogo badges that I have (later convocations with the later flag) have Juv. screwplates.

Re: Deputy Internet auctions this weekend

What bothers me most about this one is the engraving on the back. There is no dirt or different patina around the engraving, it looks like it was done yesterday. Any opinions on this? Has anyone see any genuine badges of this vintage that have such clean engraving? All of my badges, even the newer ones have some dirt in the numbers and different patina around them.

I have checked my badge III and picture is attached. Note dark color is from the silver plate still present. I have not cleaned since the silver would clean right off and it would look that pasty yellow bronze/brass color. I'll try a digital picture.

Note also large screwnut. Interestingly this is marked Metallmark, which would imply both factories were making badges for both II and III convocations. Similarly has tighter flag-staff slot and half moon as on the previous badge.

RE reverse, it looks the same as auction piece but I can't scan screwback reverses. But checking again, the numbers are shiny/clear. This badge has been in my possession since before 2000. Shiny then, shiny today.

Reverse of (III) badge showing shiny numbers and convocation.

Note verdigris (greening) of bronze/brass near slot but shiny numbers.

Re: Deputy Internet auctions this weekend

You are right, the numbers are still shiny on yours, and yours looks good, it looks old. The one on ebay looks much newer, look at the bolt on the back, yours has some discoloration, it looks like it has been there since 1951. The one on E looks like it was attached more recently, perhaps it is repaired.

Also, the location of the convocation and deputy numbers is reversed from yours to one listed in the E auction. I would think they would have been consistent with this. Have you seen any other deputy badges where the convocation and deputy numbers are on the opposite side for badges from the same convocation?
