Leningrad

I got it as a bonus to other medals I bought.
Just thought it might be interesting. Same story as with Berlin one, looks like cooper and the digits on the reverse

Re: Leningrad

ph3s,

Your medal is OK, it just had a tough life. As to the number on it, there is no definite explanation; it is supposed that these correspond to the SN of the award document.

Marc, I've heard that explanation here and on Mondvor, but no one ever said just who did the stamping of the numbers. (I've also seen them on the outer rim of the medal itself).

It's difficult to say, no info, some say it's been done locally on regiments, some by veterans themselves. The fakt is you can see numbers mostly on early medals and mostly Moscow, Leningrad, Caucasus

Re: Leningrad

One credible version is that the numbers were stamped when a veteran gave his medals to be mounted on a multi-medal suspension, so as not to mix up medals between recipients.

The simplest answers are often the right ones in a world of Russian practicality and pride of ownership over the medals he or she won - and rightly so.:thumbsup

Re: Leningrad

That is interesting kolodka. Is one layer been removed and additional peace of metal placed?

Re: Leningrad

No, it is a usual suspension, except that it was gold-plated.
