For Combat Merits,1124346,Driver,159th Guards Artillery Regiment
Hi guys,
Here's a cool set I acquired recently. The owner was a clerk in the army and a bookeeper in his civilian life, and took meticulous care of all his documents. Golubovskij Fedor Davidovich was born in 1906 and lived in Voroshilovgrad (Lugansk, Ukraine). He served in the 159 guards' artillery regiment (polk) of the 75 guards' rifle division. In late 1942-early 1943, his division fought in Stalingrad, protected the "Red October" factory, and participated in Operation Koltso to encircle Paulus' 6 Army. The army was part of the 1st Belarus Front for the majority of the remainder of the war. A short man (159 cm in height, about 5' 2"), he worked as a bookeeper/cashier prior to the war and continued as a clerk for most of the war. It probably saved his life.. Fedor was awarded the Combat Service Medal on July 1, 1944. The citation says that: "Driver of artillery supply, guards private Golubovsky Fedor Davidovich..in the period of battles in breaking through the defenses of Germans in the area of Parichi, without regard to sleep, he tirelessly supplied ammunition to the frontline, and also kept stock of all the artillery regiment's ammunition, which contributed to correct distribution of ammo for holding fire and carrying out the set objective. I have his Labor Book too, he worked as a bookkeeper after the war--primarily in Donbassantratsit-Shahtostrojmontazh. (Donbass Coal / Mine Building and Construction Department)
He lived a long life, because I have a photo of his 1985 GPW-II. Too bad the children/grandchildren sold his awards...but he can live again through our research! George Last edited by Pobeda45; 12-11-2010 at 02:00 PM. |

Nice group and docs! Being a clerk in the artillery regiment may have been his good fortune; most artillery of the units in the city stayed on the east bank of the Volga during the battle. Not having to make 'the crossing' greatly increased one's chances of living.
