Malaya Zemlya (Russian: Малая Земля, lit. "Minor Land") was a Soviet uphill outpost on Cape Myskhako (Russian: Мысхако) that was recaptured after fierce, bloody battles with the Germans during the Battle of Caucasus, on the night of 4 February 1943. The episode paved way for a Soviet attack on German forces in Novorossiysk.
Cape Myskhako is still associated with a heroic stand made by the 800-strong contingent of the Soviet Naval Infantry against the Germans during the Second World War. The special forces were dropped during winter high storms by the Soviet Black Sea Fleet. After the unsuccessful landing attempt at Malajia Ozereevka. The landing at Malaya Zemlya was supposed to be a decoy, but after the landing at Bolshaia Ozereevka was lost in an ambush, the offensive plan was reworked and the landing site at Malaya Zemlya was made the main landing location. Upon landing to secure the beachhead they came under furious German counter-offensive, that utilized both the ground and airforces.

Re: Glory III,Rifleman,815th Rifle Regiment,Catch-up,792221

Does it seem that thigh wound kept him out for the rest of the war?
It seems to be a bit disappointing to see an OG3, and almost a RS, awarded for just a wound and time served. Are many of the 'catch up' awards for stuff like that?

Re: Glory III,Rifleman,815th Rifle Regiment,Catch-up,792221

It's a nice writeup, nicer than most of the period too. Brezhnev described his experiences there in his (entirely ghost written) book called Novaya Zemlya.

It's not a catch up award though, catch up usually means that the decree or "prikaz" was issued in the 1940s but the award was issued later. This is a wound award, waves of which were authorized by decrees of the Supreme Soviet starting right after the war. Combat Service, Bravery, Glory awards are common. Red Star, Patriotic War wound awards occur too--mostly for officers and for more serious injuries. ("invalidnost" status/different classifications of a disabled veteran)
I have a Red Banner wound award for a poor fellow who was a BT-5 Tank Lieutenant and lost both arms and an eye in 1941. Because he was both and officer and because the wounding was so severe, the award was accordingly high.
I think it's nice these guys got the recognition for their sacrifice..but most didn't, for example my grandfather never raised the award issue with his Voenkomat despite having been wounded 3 times.

Cheers, George
