Title "Hero of the Mongolian People's Republic"

Since the earlier thread got eaten by forum gremlins, let us try again.

Somewhat mythologically, the use of this title can be dated back to 1206 and the era of Chengiz Khan. While it had been used sporadically in the 1911-21 peiod, the modern "Hero" title began after liberation in 1922.

Until 1941, there was no badge to accompany the title and when the new badge was adopted it was awarded retrospectively to those who had received the title before.

Type 1 -- only 6 were awarded, while 25 were made, ordered in Oct. 1940 -- most badges you see are unawarded from the bank -- observed serial number range Low = 1/High =23 -- Battushig A1

Type 1.1 -- mintmark МД -- serial number range unknown

The first two badges of this type were awarded to Horloogiyn Choybalsan (Хорлоогийн Чойбалсан). I show an example and the recipient wearing this badge. The damage/repair to this badge looks much worse in the scan than it does in real life.

Type 1.2 -- mintmark МОНЕТНЫЙ ДВОР -- serial number range unknown

Re: Title "Hero of the Mongolian People's Republic"

In 1946, a new design was introduced and, as relevant, old badges were exchanged for new (it seems there were only four such exchanges).

Type 2 -- ribboned screwback suspension, hand engraved serial number -- numbers 1-20 were ordered in Feb. 1946, 21-40 in 1967, 41-45 in April 1981, and 46-50 in 1986 (later badges MAY have been produced, the sources are unclear) -- the data on reported serial numbers are confused, so I won't report them -- Battushig A2

Here is an example (sorry for the bad photo) and a photo of the recipient wearing this badge.

Sub-varieties are reported/discussed, but the question remains open whether they mean anything or not.

Type 2.1 -- suspender nut square

Type 2.2 -- suspender nut hexagonal

As I wrote in my book, there were only 50 Type 2, Hero badges or officially known as "Gold Star" Medals were manufactured in the USSR. I do have archival information on how many medals were ordered and produced at the mint but unfortunately do not have a full list of recipients attached to the medal serial numbers yet. I am still working on this. In my book, one will see some information on the serial numbers of the Gold Star Medal and who got which serial numbered piece (though incomplete). Pages 42-43.

I did not include the names and other information on two later period (Mongolia period) Heroes of Mongolia, namely Major General D. Gungaa and Member of Parliament E. Bat-Uul (both bestowed the titles in 2009). Late MG Gungaa received the last specimen-Gold Star Medal produced in the USSR with the serial number 50. I learnt this information from a staff of the Award section of the President of Mongolia who I met during the research work there. As for Bat-Uul, he received a Type 3 (I would classify), Gold Star Medal. I actually held the one of two specimens produced. Since the President's Office ran out of the Soviet made stock, they had to order two specimens at the Mongolian Mint in 2009. One of the medals went to Bat-Uul and another is kept in the safe of the staff I mentioned above. The main visual difference on Type 2 medal is that it has a enamelled ribbon on the obverse of the suspension. The medal seemed a bit larger in size and did not have a serial number.

Here is Bat-Uul's photo taken during the award ceremony in December 2009. Sorry for the quality.

Re: Title "Hero Of The Mongolian People's Republic".

Attached something that just arrived in my hands: Hero of Mongolia Gold Star nr 14

Unfortunately the name of the recipient is not listed in Urnukh's book but I believe I've narrowed it down to 3 possibilities. Hoping to nail this down further in coming weeks/months/years?

It took 10+ years of patience to fill this gap in my collection - a few more to go!

Pics not great quality - need a new phone.

Keep an eye out for an upcoming OMSA article around a documented Mongolian Hero Gold Star. One forum member informed me he's wrapping up an article with a co-author. Hopefully it will contain some good pics incl. of the award document.

As per your second point, no, this is my first Mongolian Her Gold Star. I do have a 'filler' being a fake version which I considered reasonable as I assume I'd never be able to acquire a genuine one. That issue is now solved. Fingers crossed around progress to get the name of the recipient.

There is still one for sale at a NJ dealer but at a heavily inflated price. That one - as well as mine - came from a public auction.

Re: Title "Hero Of The Mongolian People's Republic".

I've been hunting down a hero star for over a decade and didn't get close... and then within the last half year I managed to get two in my collection.

Here is my recent addition - Hero Star nr 13, awarded to Dandar Baatar. A very interesting bio on him is here: https://mongoliafaq.com/?p=2605

I'm really happy for you! I suppose you didn't catch it at the same stratospherical price than the New Jersey one...
But are we so.many amateurs on the avalaible market?

P.S.: I love the blog you posted!
